I dunno BPS, here is an "old school" bike parking station on Mt. Washington. Functionality is just "so-so," but the view is great:

this one still takes the cake

built at a cost of $366,000 and has never had more than three bikes in it at any one time

Free Bicycle Garage In The East End Offers A Safe Spot To Leave Your Ride

"The shelter can hold 80 bikes and, according to the URA, cost $366,000 to build. A Federal Transit Administration grant covered most of that cost."

google street view has photographed this thing every year since it was built in 2017 and not one street view shows a bike

Thanks, since I basically just bike in the city for exercise, not commuting, I literally had no idea what that thing was supposed to be (although I typically drive by that, as I don't like biking down that stretch of Penn anyway). I dunno, biking infrastructure has to start somewhere. Even Amsterdam was quite car-centric 60 years ago, as I understand it.

Bike lanes, I can take them or leave them, although I quite like the one through Bloomfield on Liberty.

the bike lanes for the most part i get - it's all these parking stations and structures that seem stupid

the whole idea of a bike as i remember it was you just chained it to whatever was around

cars need parking spots and garages - bikes do not

If one bicycle was there it is a wash. If two are there it is a win. Simple geometry. Bikes don't take up much space, but every car they replace is a win. It isn't just a win for less wear and tear on streets and one less car driving, it is a win at giving people a healthy lifestyle.

"According to Rebecca Schenck, project specialist at the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the garage will hold up to 80 bicycles behind locked gates. The bikes can be accessed using an electronic key fob and the garage will charge a still-undetermined annual membership fee. Fees for bike garages typically range from $100-150 per year. There will also be free bike racks just outside the garage for commuter use."

that was the plan originally - users paid an annual fee in exchange for security

then they sent out a survey to gauge interest in that plan and quickly realized not one person was interested

maybe should have sent out the survey before building it

I live in the city (east end) and witnessed the evolution of bike culture in this city. These major infrastructure improvements including biking are designed to accommodate future growth. There has been growth and from what I’ve witnessed Pittsburgh is progressing. My brother moved from Pittsburgh in 2005. He is thoroughly impressed with Pittsburgh’s progress over the years. I do not think these amenities are a waste. This station was mostly funded by a government grant that was highly competitive nationwide. I would prefer Pittsburgh to receive this funding over Charlotte, St Louis, or Indianapolis.

The facility as well as bike culture will evolve over time.
