What the news failed to explain……

The US Steel tower has an exoskeleton made of hollow exposed (corten) steel. The hollow exterior columns are full of liquid fire retardant. That liquid can be pumped to wherever the fire occurs.

The contractor assumed otherwise and attempted to drill into the column causing the leak. The pressurized leak

Thanks, I was actually curious but had not gotten around to looking into more. I am not a PE but often have design/build work in my programs. I find the alternative ways of design interesting.

I beg to differ. Harrison & Abramovitz > HOK

Pittsburgh has a nice collection of office towers from every generation. This particular tower pushed the envelope with innovative design. It is one of the larger office towers in the US with regards to square footage 2.3MSQFT. The building has the largest rooftop at a height of 808ft. The building is bulky and does not taper. It represents strength.

Yes, I enjoy the older architecture, older the better. I am likely the odd one but I just don't care for PPG building though. It feels 80's but not in a good way.

I disagree. PPG is one of the best representations of post modern architecture. PPG's nod to West Minster Abbey and the use of highly sophisticated glazed glass is quite beautiful. Not to mention the use of glass by the largest glass maker vis something special. I think PPG kept up with the times.

I do see quite a few tourists and probably locals taking photos of the PPG buildings. I like them but also prefer the older buildings. Favorites are Frick, Koppers, Union Trust Buildings.

The William Penn, Union Trust, and Frick Building were constructed on Grant by Henry Clay Frick as a Middle finger to Andrew Carnegie. Those building blocked the view of the Carnegie building (Kaufmann Annex) that fronted on Fifth Ave. There was other controversies surrounding the Frick building as it blocked the highest structure in the city. The Allegheny County Courthouse is one of the best buildings anywhere. It may be H.H. Richardson's greatest work.

The bell tower of the Allegheny Counter Courthouse serves multiple purposes. It is obviously as Bell Tower but it is also a fresh air intake vent. The building would bring "fresher" air into the well lit building. This was a very modern feature at the time1880s. Not to mention ground lever air was so polluted at the time.

I like said, I'm sure many will disagree. Just not a style I like.
