I'm a potential transplant for FedEx Ground and interested in a more rural setting with a couple acres, if possible. I've done some Google mapping of the area north of the airport (Independence area). Can anyone share their experience in this part of the area? Apologies in advance if this has been covered. I went back several pages before posting, but may have missed it.

Sorry, I am not well versed in the Independence area. It is next to some declining areas, but if you are looking for a land and country living and have no kids, all you should think about is price and how much land, unless you are thinking of starting a family. I don't know the area well enough to advise, but wanted to bump your thread up a bit in hopes someone could give you a hand.

North of the airport is Hopewell Township, which is more just suburban Aliquippa. Nice enough, I'd say, but not very rural at all.

If you want a more rural experience, I'd steer more to the west and south of the port to towns like Joffre, Slovan, Bulger and Paris.

Personally, I'd recommend looking west of PIT in northern Washington County, along the U.S. 22 corridor. There's plenty of wide-open space out near McDonald, Midway and Burgettstown. (If you look out there, then look west of the junction between U.S. 22 and PA 576.)

Independence is at the Hopewell exit at route 151. It's very rural heading towards routes 30, and 18.

It's a very nice area of Beaver County. Raccoon State Park is very close, along with State game lands. You could get yourself a nice chunk of land for little money. I would look at the top of a hill where it's flatter with a nice view. Go to bing maps, and check out the bird's eye view.

I grew up in Independence. I think you may like it there as it is quiet and rural, but fairly convenient to everything, especially your job at FedEx ground and the airport.

Finding an acre or two to call home should not be a problem. The lower taxes of Beaver County is a plus.

With all due respect, it's as suburban as anywhere else, but it's not at all like Aliquippa.

I agree with the other posters that Independence is much more rural in character though, although there is some open ground in Hopewell too. (Thre's a sign at Independence Elementary that forbids horses on school property.) Both Independence and Racoon belong to the Hopewell school district, so that wouldn't really be a factor in choosing between them.
