Dont be such a classist, most of those states are very poor. Poverty and obesity are linked. The rich states are skinny because they have more access to better food, not just all the frankenfood crap they get in the country.

Hmmmm...

Perhaps the obese folks in the "red" states are so depressed at watching the utter fools in the "blue" states flush the whole country down the tolie that they use food as an emotional crutch and eat too much...???

Um, that makes no sense. How are you equating morbid obesity with success

In the south, havent seen much evidence in the state I currently live...You will see physicians who are fit and in shape at age 65, but obese kids shopping with morbidly obese parents and eat at Hardee's and McDonald's every week. Also in the south the only seafood they eat is fried in saturated fats, kind of like people used to eat in the 1800's. They still use Crisco here.

Its sad that parents dont teach their kids about nutrition here.

Yes, it's a bit more inconvenient and more expensive but your body with thank you for it when you get older.

Just think logically..they feed corn to cows to quickly fatten them up before slaughter.
They feed growth hormones to livestock to make them grow faster and fatter before slaughter.

And here we are eating the same makeup..some directly and some indirectly. WE ARE GETTING FATTENED UP TOO !
Agreed. Meat is not a necessary protein source. And people always use the excuse that fast food is cheaper, its not when you get a heart attack prematurely, from eating fast food every week.

Whole grains like brown rice and oatmeal are not expensive. Dont see many young Americans eating that here though. Chips, Coca-Cola, Mountain Dew and Tennessee sausage biscuits are not real food.

Yes, she probably saw the 20/20 report in which a lot of poor people in West Virginia who had bad teeth also loved to drink Mountain Dew.

So only conservatives get upset when people in government boss them around and tell them that they know best how they should live their lives?

Well, at least we know red states won't be following the government like sheep.

Sure they will. They'll just be FAT sheep.

The southern states have higher obesity rates because

A) The poverty rates are higher there (and poor folk tend to eat more carbs & fat (which are usually cheap) and less fresh fruits & vegis (which are usually more expensive)).

B) Traditional Southern foods are generally higher in carbs & fat (with lots of fried dishes) - this is aside from the poverty issue and is really more cultural (though the original reason folks in the south began eating what they eat probably WAS due in part to economic hardship in the area).

It's pretty simple really - you eat a lot of fatty, high-carb foods and you get fat. It's not exactly rocket science.

In fact, red states also have some of the lowest per capita incomes in America. It's not success that makes people fatter it's poor dietary choices and lack of exercise.

By the way there are the states with the lowest personal per capita income.

Louisiana: $21,439.21 per capita
Mississippi: $25,817.78 per capita
Arkansas: $27,152.87 per capita
West Virginia: $27,217.90 per capita
New Mexico: $27,634.02 per capita
Utah: $28,107.96 per capita
Idaho: $28,123.37 per capita
South Carolina: $28,496.27 per capita
Kentucky: $28,578.34 per capita

you missed the point. The comment was that the red states were upset when someone in government told them how to their lives. i made the point that the red states do not take kindly to the political elites bossing them around, it has nothing to do with their body fat index.

It's always been, and always will be the blue states that want to empower the government to dictate their lives for them, and take care of them from cradle to grave.
