But it really did surprise me that cities like Columbus and Augusta, Georgia (I have lived in both) or even Charlotte and all the Texan metropolises were well ahead of other cities when it comes to integration. The lines were quite literally blurred, while in cities like Baltimore, Philly, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Chicago you can put the different races into neat little boxes.
Don't be surprised about Columbus and Augusta, GA. They are Army towns (Ft. Benning, Ft. Gordon) and the armed forces are color-blind.
So is San Antonio, which has a major Army base and 3 or 4 Air Force bases.
I love it when people say how racist and divided the South is. NOT!
It wasn't the citizens of Montgomery or Jackson or Baton Rouge who burnt school busses to prevent racial bussing back in the 60's and 70's...it was our northern neighbors (see: Yankees) in Boston!
Nice maps, prove the simple truth, everyone feels confortable by living in a neighbourhood with his own kind of people...
Well, there may be an unfortunate level of truth to that, since there are always many ass-hats of all colors spoiling things for everyone else.

That ain't the American Way, buddy. No, siree. Listen here, professor. You're the one who need an American History lesson. You don't know nothin' about Lady Liberty standin' there in the harbor, with her torch on high screamin' out to all the nations in the world: "Send me your poor, your deadbeats, your filthy." And all the nations send 'em in here, they come swarming in like ants. Your Spanish P.R.'s from the Caribboin, your Japs, your Chinamen, your Krauts and your Hebes and your English ****. All of 'em come in here and they're all free to live in their own separate sections where they feel safe. And they'll bust your head if you go in there. *That's* what makes America great, buddy. --Archie Bunker, 1976

Actually it was some of the citizens in Montgomery that bombed Black American churches back in the 1950's that resulted in the death of four Black American young girls, it was Southern governors standing on the steps of universities in the 1960's protesting the integration of the schools of higher education. It was Southerners that killed four civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1960's.
Yes, there were protesting of school bussing in Northern states throughout the 1960's and 1970's. But Southern school districts remained under federal court orders for school desegregation will until the 1990's (I.E. the Dallas Independent School District).
