The op's wording is correct. The tax rate we have now is a temporary bill enacted by Bush to expire at the end of the year.
Quite frankly every bill/law should have a sunset clause. That does not mean that the current rates, after a decade, are not the new norm. .
Those who support a return to the Clinton tax rates via an Obama tax hike should just go ahead and send a check voluntarily to the government. In fact, what stopped you from doing so for the last 10 years? Do you have to have something legislated in order to do it?
Agreed the dems were the bigger people and made a HUGE compromise, and the right still acted like children. At this point 1,000,000 and under is off the table. All that's left is extend them permanently, extend them all temporarily, or just let them expire completely. The 3rd option is the only fair one at this point.
I agree the Repubs are total morons for not taking the $1 million compromise. They get a big win in the elections, then they throw it all away with policies nobody can fail to recognize are all for the ultra-rich and screw the Middle Class. Surprising? Not in the least. Both political parties are carefully manipulated to keep the split between them almost exactly 50-50. And the disastrous results of Democratic rule have to be offset by a really stupid move by the Republicans.
If there are 10 people in the Country that are really happy with everything their chosen party does, I'd be surprised. The ultra-rich have their representatives, the ultra-poor have theirs, and vast majority of Middle Class get no representation at all.
As to the options for tax policy given above, given those 3 alternatives, we all know the idiots will probably choose the second.
Which is the absolute worst thing they could do for the economy, since the incredibly uncertainty of the future is what is making this Depression (let's call it what it is) continue to erode the American quality of life.
Again, our elected leaders will follow the policies that doom America to the trash heap of history. I doubt we could have destroyed the Country faster if we had elected an all-Taliban government, instead of just a President who is determined to collapse the economy to achieve socialism in a single term.

Well put and the option under door #2 is heavily likely the outcome i've been reading and hearing from political analysts on both sides of the isle saying it will come down to the 11th hour with the right giving the dems an unemployment extension in exchange for keeping the tax cuts for the rich. It's the worst thing that can be done but both sides are going to come out as a political win/win but a lose/lose for america.
I guarantee Obama is going to give a speech to the extent "We are extending the tax cuts for only two years (insert outrage) I know, I know, but it's only temporary and raising taxes right now on the middle class would be the absolute worst thing we can do. We also have won an unemployment extension which we direly need.
While McConnell will say: We have kept our promise to offer absolutely no compromise and have succeeded. We have won a two year full extension (insert outrage) though we agreed to this only as in two years, we will have a republican president and we can sign permanent the tax cuts or even give more to the top earners.

I agree with this paragraph. Big mistake by repubs and they are overestimating what they perceive is full tea party support. I'm starting to question if the "tea party is hijacked" theory is actually true.
The $1 Million cutoff (while keeping all tax cuts in place for 99% of taxpayers) was the best idea imho. I lean conservative and I must admit, the GOP looks bad here by failing to compromise..
Not to someone WITHOUT wealth envy. Please tell me why ANYONES tax burden should go up as long as it's not yours.
