A German manufacturer was being interviewed on a cable business program. He was very wealthy so the interviewer kept on about all the taxes he was paying in Germany. The guy just didn't seem interested in talking about it, but the interviewer would not let it go. Finally, the German said, "I just don't care about the taxes I pay". The interviewer was speechless for a few seconds and then blurted out, "But why don't you care"? The German thought for a couple of seconds and replied. "Because I don't want to be a rich man living in a poor country".

Good point. Almost sounds too good to be true.

The crazies on both sides run each party anyway.

I don't believe I've heard anyone say that rich people shouldn't pay taxes. What is the point of this? I'm pretty sure that rich people in the US are happy to pay taxes too. The foolish spending of our taxes is the problem rich and the middle class people have with taxation. Wise spending means lower taxes for all and the building up of trust in a government that doesn't enjoy that from those who elected them.

Its a critical difference and one that many of us Americans might never understand. The idea of it runs completely against the individualistic American "ethos and spirit" of work hard, earn hard for your own self.
I understand reaping the reward of your work, but if given the opportunity to be a rich person in a country with increasing poverty, or a rich person in a country where, due to high taxes, there is low poverty and high quality of life, its a no brainer for me.

Well, but there is a fair amount of grumbling amongst the middle class (upper and lower) that they are being taxed heavily yet don't seem to see "where it is all going." For the rate hard working Americans are being taxed, there should be more in return. Thats kind of the bizarre reality too in this whole new wave of people griping about their fears of socialism. Many Americans pay nearly as much in taxes as some EU citizens yet dont get nearly the "return" in benefit.

I don't mind paying taxes. I'm not an anarcho-capitalist or wants to privatize the court system. I am willing to give up 15% or so of my income for defense, interstate highways, diplomacy, etc, not 45% to fund pig research in Argentina.

This is true.

I seem to remember once, a friend and I compared the total tax burden in New York with that in Norway, and they were quite similar. Whereas, when it came to getting something back for the taxes, there was no comparison at all.
