Doesn't bother me at all as long but up to a point. It'd **** me off to no end if the stores stopped carrying pork and shellfish all of a sudden to 'pacify' Muslims, but religious Jews have similar prejudices against food (no pork and no shellfish)
Although, come to think of it there are some items in Asian diet that would raise hell, but formally would still be OK in the 'it's private enterprise' line of thought. Imagine if stores started carrying dog, cat meat, monkey brains, tiger testicles, live snakes, fried cockroaches, etc..., or a stoning kit, or live goats for a halal slaughter. There are obvious unspoken limits to 'free enterprise', although I'm sure one could make much money on the above items.
p.s. is there a burqa (headscarf) section at Walmart yet? Made in some festive colors at least, not just the spooky depressing black

I could care less if a company wants to cater to whatever market it chooses. As long as they don't limit their selection because it might offend another group, I don't have a problem.
I dunno, as long as halal goods don't displace other goods I don't see the big whoop. But if companies are intimidated in to, say, not selling or serving bacon or other harem (forbidden) foods then I'd have an issue with that. Otherwise this is just good business.
A marketing campaign just targets the existing product to another segment.
In the case of Muslims the product itself must be changed to accommodate their religion so it's more than just marketing.
Chicken McNuggets for example..the chicken has to be slaughtered via a religious ritual with a prayer to Allah otherwise they cannot eat it.
But basically the chicken nuggets would be exactly the same and still taste like crap right? The consumer won't notice a thing unless McD's marketed it as "halal". I mean, if chicken nuggets had ALWAYS been halal would anyone have cared?
I suppose the way I see it is that if a company can do something simple that doesn't actually change the food and will open up a whole new market segment they would be stupid not to do it.
People get concerned when they think specific consumers, in this case Muslims, are the ones pushing innocent little businesses into doing what they want. What they should be thinking about is how the businesses are tweaking themselves to make more money. The consumer is always the target. Always.
But you should be given the information that the meat was produced by a ritual religious slaughter.
You might think twice about buying that meat/meal.
I don't buy Halal anything due to the ritual prayer to Allah done during slaughter and the means of slaughter. Those are just my principals.
Advertise the meat is Halal and then people are free to choose.
Eh, I don't have those "principals". The chicken and rice from Rafiqi's Halal street cart outside my building is delicious, and only five bucks, besides. Comes with salad.
Nothing we can do, this is the wave of our Future, how are we going to stop this. Just as long as the quality, doesn't diminish to.
Why should we wanna stop it?
