Pretty big IF; and how often does this happen per capita in your city/county/state?
maybe you want a violent crime to be visited upon your person, I dont know and I dont care. but in my home, I dont want that happening to my family or me, and I need and want the best equalizer I can to protect my family and I from that happening.
FWIW, when it comes to the "stuff" in the house, I agree with you. Take it - that's why I pay insurance. However, there is no guarantee that the person coming into your house illegally is only there to take your material things. I simply am not willing to take a chance when it comes to the safety of my family and myself.
Why would someone just wanting your 'stuff' be armed with a gun?
Maybe you haven't heard about this case, where the cops just set up a barricade in the neighborhood and gave the perps hours to rape, murder, and then burn this family.
I actually watched the Dateline (or whatever show it was) episode on that story, and there was a LOT more to it. And if memory serves, the doctor had a gun in his home which did no good... since the attackers got him while he napped in the sunroom, and the rest of his family was asleep in bed. Absolutely awful story, but his gun did nothing to help - and I don't fully blame the cops either, after seeing how the whole thing went down.

my wife and I both sleep with a holstered pistol under our pillows, and when I nap i still have a pistol on my hip as well.

Ouch... LOL.
Not everyone does that, however, and some people sleep pretty heavy! My point being that you can't blame the cops, or the lack of firearms, in that particular story.
