Now they have also agreed to give up the benefits that the governor asked for...which amounts to a 20-35% cut in pay for many of them. They already make 25% less than people with the same degrees make in the private sector. They are not fighting for money. They are fighting to keep class sizes at a level where teaching can take place, to keep untrained people with no education from taking care of the sick and dying, to make sure that they have the safety equipment necessary to fight crime and fires. These are the type of items that they negotiate in bargaining. They are NOT thugs. They are the people that make our state safe and worth living in.
great post and very informative. seems like "thugs" is the word of the month for the extreme right.

71% of Americans don't want to pay any more in taxes of any kind. When you can't raise taxes to pay for the unions' demands, there's nothing with which to negotiate.

Um... not always. Stop paying your property tax bill because you can't afford to and see what happens.

This link is San Diego's Tax Collector, which sells people's homes out from under them to collect delinquent property tax.
County of San Diego Treasurer - Tax Collector (http://www.co.san-diego.ca.us/ttc/pts_info_di.html - broken link)

That happens all over the country when union-stoked rising property tax bills push homeowners over the edge.

In many cases, the loan payment stays the same, but the property tax escrow skyrockets over the years to meet public union demands, making the mortgage payment unaffordable.

I'm not surprised that unions from all over the US are going to Wisconsin to fight this. Wisconsin wins and the unions will fall apart.
It depends on the moderate R's in those red states. Even if Walker gets the votes to do what he wants, R's will be looking at the backlash he gets if it goes through. If there are enough moderate R's willing to join with the democrats to block the legislation in R controlled statehouses (and that's where the fight is) then it's not going anywhere nationally. That's what happened with the US House vote to defund the NLRB (national labor relations board)--60 moderate R's joined with the Dem's to kill it.

Backlash? What backlash? Taxpayers will be relieved when it goes through. Who are there more of? Public union members? Or fed up taxpayers?

Those 60 Rs really deserve some credit for their votes.

Yes they do. People don't seem to get it--not all republicans are opposed to unions. It's just the far right end of the party, and if the R party wanted to pick the one issue that would tear it apart, this might be it.

I'll ask you again, because you seem to be incapable of recognizing the significance... who are there more of? Unionized public employees? Or fed up taxpayers?

Hint: 71% of taxpayers don't want to pay any more of any kind of tax (Gallup).

No--I'm just ignoring you, because you say the same things over and over again in a rant. Try middle and working class voters--again--you don't seem to get it. Not every union supporter is a "liberal."

And on the tax thing--show me the legislation in Wisconsin to raise taxes? The employees have been willing to take the cuts the governor requested to meet the budget crisis, but he's refusing to take out the part of the legislation that eliminates bargaining for non-monetary items. That part has nothing to do with the budget crisis, and that's why you're seeing 80,000 people a day at the statehouse there.

No matter how many times you go on a "cost to the taxpayers" rant, it doesn't make it so.
