Here are some examples of the dumbing down of the American Culture:

Hip Hop Gangster Rap
Rising High School Dropout Rate
The TV News Channel
Tabloids (Paris, Brittany, Lindsey)
Quality of Movies
Multiculturalism
Political Correctness
Instant Messaging instead of talking face to face anymore

Is the American culture being dumbed down, or just changing?

I dont teach my daughter any of that crap. I teach her about independence, the Constitution and americans history. sadly not well taught anymore.
I teach her to be not politically correct and self reliant. I had to go to school last year for her because she had popped a boy in the nose for pinching her behind. She was the 1 that got into trouble, not the boy. Man how sissified, boys are becoming.

I know exactly how you feel....I have a daughter in fifth grade now who I've invested my all in teaching her to run equipment, weld, shoot, hunt, fish, garden, raise animals for food and to sell and many ,many other things...I do this in a fun way and NEVER let her know that I'm teaching her nor do I ever try to use scare tactics with her and say things that may upset her like "One day you'll be glad you know all this stuff when [insert doom and gloom here]".I'm trying to get her to the point where she doesn't have to one day rely on somebody to make a living for her or for her to be trapped in a dead end marriage or job with no way out like so many other women are.I just pray she does well.

I teach her to be self reliant and honest and to never depend 100% on anyone or anything but GOD......Like you I have also taught her that history is mostly written by the victors or the ones with the biggest mouth and is not neccesarily true just because it's in a book.....I also teach her that to get along in school she has to play the game and to learn the things THEY want her to learn and so far she has made honor roll a few times and does well for the most part.

I have been to her school once this year and once last year over her punching one of these pervert boys in her class....I've told her that if I ever caught her starting trouble she would get the punishment she deserved with no backing from me whatsoever, but if she was defending herself or in the right I'd back her till the end of time and she can tell us the truth about anything.I applaud your efforts in raising your child to be her own person and not just follow the herd rep2u

You forgot:
Selling a war for profit with with a pack of lies to a gullible, ignorant, unquestioning public who think war is a football game.

What makes it worse by far is that it wasn't even a hard sale....THEY WANTED to buy it lock, stock and barrel.

That was a hilarious movie... however it focused mostly on trailer trash idiocy and didn't give equal tribute to inner city ghetto idiocy.

dummed? dumbed....guess your point is proved.

As to schools. You have largely inadequate teeachers with little ability that expect little and in return get very little. You have parents that in many cases have no clue what is being taught. and no interaction with the teachers. kids are kids they will try to get away with as much as they can, not realizing what they are loosing. Nothing will change on that front but when you have a culture that is utterly ignorant... I speak of the hip hop group. they don't even realize they do not conversate....and forget about conjugations and tense. If there is no one to correct and expect more then how does one expect it to be delivered? Teachers need to be on pay for performance, parental contribution needs to be a requirement for enrollment and the horrible teachers need to be removed from their post. make startiung pay $50-60k and attract people that have a solid knowledge and ability to impart that knowledge. If teachers can't speak proper English, then terminate them. If their knowledge base is poor, again termiinate them. standardized tests should not be the requirement for students only teachers need to take them and if they don't score in the 90 percentile... good bye.
Make state schools free or near so for residents.. that way higher education becomes viable. share resources, with buildings and staff. require Masters level and above for teachers.

There is your solution for the ignorance in the country. Educate, educate, educate and do so with skilled educators.

True, but it gave a funny exaggerated glimpse into what our future generations may be looking forward too."Brawndo,it's got electrolytes".I suggest to all members who are at the video store bored and looking for something to watch to go ahead and rent it,it's pretty funny.

Culture never used to be so available in so many places, in so many ways. There was a time where people could largely control what their kids saw or read. Now they can click on TV or internet and see the soft-core porn of Victoria's Secret "fashion shows," or buy a "Glamour" magazine at the local store that has the word "sex" in big letters all over the cover.
Not that sex is the only thing, of course. Maybe it used to be that people who weren't inclined to school left early and went and got jobs- jobs that no longer exist. There were no video games to waste time and brain cells, never mind TV. There weren't ubiquitous stupid/porn/etc. advertising on every wall, vehicle, radio, screen, and shirt.
Now, yes, people can try hard to keep these things out of their minds and of course their kids' minds. But it's a lot of heavy lifting that previously wasn't needed.
On the up side, people have access to ideas and thoughts and opportunities that weren't available in the past. Oppressions of women and minorities and abuse of kids and women are now talked about and sometimes addressed.
And hey, we have antibiotics. Someone should have told my longshoreman grandfather that when he got pneumonia just before medicatioins were available in 1939.
I do think ubiquitous media is a problem more than a solution, in total.

That is hilarious...we own a small store and everytime someone comes to the cash register carrying one of those I think about that redhead in the movie saying that.......We are also located along a bike trail and when those health nuts come in and buy vitamin water they stand there reading the bottle and I feel like saying in a real stupid hick voice and slurring my speech..."It's got electrolytes" and then winking.....Knowing that bunch they'd just agree with me anyway.
