Being atheist doesn't mean you are able to use logic and common sense in all situations. It just means you don't believe in God. Believing in God is only one area of many, and even if we assume atheism is the most logical outlook (just saying this for argument's sake), an atheist could still have a completely illogical and irrational outlook on a host of other political topics.
I have no problem with a president who believes that we all have a spiritual nature. I do have a problem with a president who is a member of a fundamentalist religion or who takes his religious scripts and teachings literally. If we all took 'an eye for an eye' literally we would have blown up the world by now. If we turned the other cheek all the time this nation would no longer exist.
I think that I would be worried about a Mormon or Scientologist getting in. Just because they seem a cut above the rest madness wise.
Well, President Kennedy told the nation that he would make decisions in the best interest of the people of the United States and the pope would not be influencing his decisions.
Maybe if a Mormon or Scientologist did something of the same it would assuage people's doubts a bit. People just don't want a radical of any sorts, a zealot, in charge of the government, and that's sensible.
An atheist is just fine, as long as he or she does not try to close down all houses of worship in the country. We've probably had atheists as President, they just know that the prejudices of the public seem to want a mainstream Christian of some kind, so they go to church and make the motions of belonging to some sort of religion.
