Supporters of the healthcare reform legislation passed by Congress claim it will reduce emergency room visits by providing nearly all Americans with the insurance they can use to see a primary care physician.
A new poll says otherwise:
The survey by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) found that 97 percent of doctors every day treat Medicaid patients in their emergency departments because the patients could not find a doctor willing to treat them for the fee Medicaid would pay.
If Obamacare provides insurance that reimburses physicians at Medicaid rates, visits to the ER will likely increase, according to ACEP.
In fact, 89 percent of doctors polled said they believe ER visits will increase under Obamacare.
Hundreds of emergency rooms across the country have been forced to shut down due to financial concerns, increasing the workload at those remaining open, and the healthcare reform law fails to address this issue.
Nearly half of the physicians surveyed in ACEP’s poll said fear of lawsuits is the biggest challenge to cutting costs in emergency rooms, and 53 percent said their fear of lawsuits was the main reason for ordering many of the tests they perform.
No, it's not ultra-right wing conspiracy theory trash. It's a fact that more and more doctors and clinics are no longer accepting Medicaid/Medicare or are limiting new M/M patients. If you're on one or the other (or both) programs and need health care but can't find a doctor willing to take you on as a patient, what would you do?
I doubt that it is right wing conspiracy theory trash. Why? Because the ER rooms fill up around here after normal working hours....I wonder why?
You left wingers need to get your heads out of the sand!
ER's are filled to the brim pretty much around the clock from coast to coast, it's not just seniors, but people from all walks of life abusing the system to get care for a common cold or a stomach ache as they have no where else to go, costing the taxpayer incredible amounts. This is one of the main reasons for the Obama health care plan, and why we need to have universal care so these people can get basic services at a primary care doctor like they should, not abusing ER's on the taxpayer's back.

That's funny, My daughter is an RN at a hospital and she doesn't agree with you.. She says the flood gates open as soon as the business offices close...And if you can't figure out why then there is no hope for you! And tax payers do not pay for the visits where she works unless they are on medicare or medicaid other than that and no insurance the hospital eats it if the patient does not pay..

LOL, that may have been a stated goal of Obamacare, but shortsightedness in this POS legislation failed to look at the unintended consequences of it. Fact is, expanding Medicaid which had **** poor reimbursement rates cannot force doctors to accept these patients. Their only recourse for healthcare services is by ER visits. NOTHING will change, and as the poll suggest, ER visits will increase. You cannot compel physicians to take on more and more patients who actually cost you money to treat.

I agree with this. Plus, as I understand it, the new healthcare reform will be set up through insurance exchanges, not Medicaid.

Umm, the insurance exchanges are set up for people who couldn't purchase health insurance because of pre-existing conditions. Medicaid eligibility is VASTLY expanded under Obamacare, and is an unfunded mandate nonetheless. That's for all those poor people who can't afford insurance. You're talking about two completely different aspects of the legislation.
