He's studies linguistics, but he only talks about economics, politics, and science, which he has no credentials to show that he has credibility in what he gets paid to talk about.
You haven't seen Noam Chomsky talk about linguistics because you haven't even looked. He's one of the most influential linguistics experts of the 20th century.

My research involves computational linguistics, and I can tell you straight up that he hasn't contributed anything in the past 10 years. He also believes that statistical methods, ones which the community (including yours truly) have been getting millions in grants to investigate, are pointless. He's kind of a joke among many of us in the field. The neo-progs like the guy's statist viewpoint, but don't really admire his scholarly contributions other than CFGs.

If you've ever taken a computer science class, you would be a lot more familiar with Chomsky's apolitical side.
He's a genius in that sense...albeit with a serious bias and a bad attitude when it comes to politics.
Scientists are empirical people and they don't always make the best political pundits.
Chomsky is the old-guard way of the past and really only relevant when you take a Comp Sci compiler construction class. Jurafsky is the future of linguistics. He also doesn't have the crazy like Noam does.
Dan was at Portland the other week and I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him.

Chomsky is a very grumpy old man who thinks the world should make more sense than it does.
I noticed this trait in hard science academics in the past. It leads some to the left, some to the right, but they're always seemingly disappointed that the world doesn't make as much sense as they think it should.

I like to think of Summers73 as the future of linguistics.
