There is no way to 'live the homosexual lifestyle'. being gay is a TRAIT and people WITH THAT TRAIT lead LIVES. I'm gay and 34 and have only been with ONE person. I live in north dakota. I don't have any different 'lifestyle' than any other straight person around here. Neil Patrick harris is also born with the trait of homosexuality but that's the ONLY thing we have in common. he has a completely different lifestyle. i KNOW being gay is a TRAIT and NOT a choice because i've been gay my whole life WITHOUT CHOICE. There are even gay people who are CELIBATE. the TRAIT is the SEXUAL ORIENTATION. no one is 'choosing a lifestyle'. They're just alive born with a trait and LIVING. why is it PHRASED this way. Is this some attempt to group people born with the trait of homosexuality together to make them seem like the 'other' so that it's easier to be bigoted against them. Also, just to let you know there has yet to be a 'straight gene' discovered but i take straight people at their word when they say they were born straight and never chose to be.. why isn't that extended to me?

It's an attempt at framing it as a choice so that people do not need to feel any sense of cognitive dissonance when they hold people responsible for an immutable trait.

In a nutshell, Nim.

Yup. What nim said.
If you make it sound like a choice, it's easier to demonize people.

Excellent way to put it, nimchimosky. The gay haters are obsessed with sex, gay sex in paticular. They use every illogical thing they can to demonize it. Have you ever noticed the circular logic they use?

I think Nim nailed it ...

... but I get the feeling there may be some conservative heterosexuals here on CD who are brilliant scholars and know all there is to know about gay people (after years and years of "research") who may have a different take on this subject.

Ooh! I wonder what bible verses they'll take out of contest and twist around this time!

It is just a trait, people live normal lives with them all the time.

In fairness, everyone assumed homosexuality was a choice until science proved otherwise a few decades ago. Many otherwise well meaning people are still ignorant of the science. I think once more people understand that homosexuality is indeed a trait one is born with you'll see less and less discrimination.

There are always going to be the hateful, ignorant bigots who distrust the science or think that it's part of a liberal conspiracy, but the majority will change their tune as education on this matter spreads.

I want to know why you and other gay people feel the need to be accepted. Who honestly cares what it is?

There are a lot of behaviors that people will say they are just born with a desire to do...but it doesn't mean we just give them a free pass, tell them it's normal and celebrate them.
