When Truman lied to America that Hiroshima was a military base rather than a city full of civilians, people no doubt wanted to believe him. Who would want the shame of belonging to the nation that commits a whole new kind of atrocity.

Well, war is hell, isn't it?

Dropping the bomb saved American lives and ended the war, right quick. When your country is at war, that is really the first priority.

Think Germany wouldn't have done the same if they were able?

Regardless of whether you think Truman made the right decision, and I have seen compelling arguments both ways, one of the weakest arguments I can think of is to say "the Nazis would've done it, so why shouldn't we?"

We firebombed the crap out of Japanese cities even before we nuked them.

Even LeMay acknowledged that he would have been charged of war crimes if we lost the war.

My figures are between 618,000 to 700,000 combatants. Civilian numbers ar unknown. Few Northerners died, there is no telling how many Southerners died, many more.
