I'm surprised no one's defined "censorship" yet. What the hell are you arguing about? This is how I see it. I'm open to changing my mind, but ya gotta convince me.
1. On one hand, the law should not be allowed to arrest, fine, or otherwise harrass people for openly disagreeing with, mocking, or insulting another person/agency or idea verbally.
2. They should not be able to similarly punish someone for speaking their mind on religion, sexuality, or any other topic (even if they're promoting racism or sexism, just the beliefs themselves).
3. They SHOULD be able to arrest or fine people for threatening another person's life or threatening bodily harm to another. Gone ignored, it can very well turn into a much bigger tragedy than infringement on their precious "freedom of speech".
4. For TV, they should be able to require a rating system in which the rating remains in the corner of the screen 24/7 (none of this "NUDITY.... oh by the way, this is rated R" stuff). For radio, they should be able to censor out words as they've been doing.
5. I should be able to call a cop a pig. This is perhaps the most important one of all. Independent from #1 because cops are not people. Thank you.
A one time local dem congressman( jerrymandered into another district) who I did vote for and respect was a co sponsor of the bill. Now he's dropped his support of it. I wrote my current GOP congressman and told him to vote against it, hopefully he will. I will not vote for anybody who supports that bill.
Censorship, if used properly, will make America more civil and friendly.
It may even end racism, and silence global warming critics.
Everything will be pleasant.
Showed my wife's grandmother your little bit of wisdom here and she just shook her head in disgust. She happens to be from Munich, Germany and was living there during Hitler's end time. It reminded her of something he or his henchman would tell the masses. It started off small, then took off like wild fire(censorship). They said the same you are saying, "it will make our a nation better place to live", "Our nation will be one nation and free of racism".
No thank you to your kind of America. I (as others who have lived in oppressive censorship filled countries) want no part of your glorious plan for our beloved America. Give me the nonsense that some groups spout off here in the states over any day of censorship.....NO TO CENSORSHIP!

I think the best way to protest against censorship would be to get people together like your grandmother, who have lived under pro-censorship governments, and have them tell their stories about what it was like. Maybe then people would feel less inclined to glorify a nation with censorship.
America's history is intertwined with France. The French Enlightenment with the likes of Rousseau and Voltaire had a great influence on America.
France is still teaching us lessons on censorship and the new civility.
France just does a *slightly* better job of suppressing dissent than our gov't does. It has to do with the censorship laws they have that you speak of. All their laws really do is
ensure that hostilities come to a boil beneath the surface and then explode unpredictably.
I'd also like to think that the philosophers whose thoughts had such a great effect on early America are probably rolling over in their graves over some of this stuff.

Society must find a balance between free speech and creativity. Too much of one or the other may have a negative effect on the status quo. The government must find the correct balance. Hate crimes are a good place to start on limiting free speech.
Wow, as usual, the idiots on CD love contradictions...
This site is censored.... and on this site people are talking about how they hate censorship
Wow, just wow.... do you folks ever think before posting?
By the way, if they want to censor something.... they could start by taking Jersey Bore off tv.... let kids have their minds back
No kidding! I hate that show, but my wife watches it. However; as stupid as it is, if someone wants to watch it, have at it! I'll simply exercise my right to change the channel.
