Haha... probably a safe bet. I actually have read Chaucer, and know that it DOES contain graphic content - probably way more graphic than this book being questioned. I'll let you know when I've read & compared!

You are joking, of course? Porn wasn't in existence in 1980?????????
What world were you in?

Porn was certainly very much in existence back in the 30's & 40's, and probably even earlier.
I recall TWO Porn shops on opposite corners of the same intersection two blocks from a Community College and a HS, and about 3 or 4 blocks from an Elementary School, IN 1970. Had a boss then who used to hit one of those porn shops all the time, and he'd read his stuff during lunch. Weird guy.
BUT PORN HAS EXISTED FOR A VERY LONG TIME!!!!!!!!!

And no one is even talking Porn in this thread - it's about literature that some people find objectionable. WHich they have a right to do.

"When Vincent's 14-year old daughter began reading the book, she became upset. Vincent couldn't believe the actions described by one of the literary characters."
"She was masturbating and (describing) how to masturbate and how she did it and also giving a boy a (expletive) and going into great detail of how to perform it," said Vincent."

Well, we know the book describes how to masturbate and how to give BJs. "Giving a boy a BJ"---oh yes, BJs became popular with teens when Clinton was in office. The enlightenment of our teen population.

Blow jobs have been around a lot longer than the 90s. In fact, Warhol did a film back in the 60s.

I'm sure they were, LOL Only difference is they weren't described in books assigned for students to read for class.

Exactly. I think the radical left has gotten frustrated with too many parents actually doing their job of monitoring their kids and keeping them from being over exposed to the sex & corruption being presented by Hollywood, so now they have to sneak it in in kids' books in the schools. They know that books, unlike movies & music don't require a rating system and kids are mandated to go to school. Captive audience for all kinds of smut that if presented to minors over the internet could land someone in jail.

Maybe not that specific act, but there was plenty of "graphic" content in assigned school books back then. As for myself, I was in high school from 1990-94, and definitely remember some mature-themed books at that time! Although I went to a private prep school, where they definitely assigned more "difficult" books than most high schools... and somehow we all survived, in fact not a SINGLE student got pregnant the entire time I was there (probably a rare or nonexistent occurrence in the history of that school). They trusted us to handle the content, discussed it maturely in class, and as a result we were able to handle these topics like adults. Treat them like babies & they'll act like babies, if you know what I mean.

People have pretty much been challenging literature since - well, the beginning of literature - so this isn't a new/modern issue at ALL. How many of you read The Color Purple in high school? And how many of you realize what a controversial book it is/was, and that it's made the "challenged list" for decades? Bottom line, you need to READ these books before passing judgment, and then (for those with kids) try some actual parenting... don't allow them to read anything you deem inappropriate, and discuss any issues that might come up in books at their level. Or do you plan to shelter them forever, and just let them figure it out on their own?

If parents were doing their jobs, these kids would already be well aware of sex & masturbation by age 15... the parents would also know their reading lists for the year, and should have already investigated anything questionable on there. Don't blame the schools for a serious lack of good parenting and awareness.

Btw, parents are ALWAYS allowed to prohibit their child from reading a required book, and in this particular case, there was even a permission slip sent home. No other parents at the school complained, and managed to get (and I assume read) the permission slips before signing. So how exactly was anything being "forced" on them?

LMAO... I was only 6 years old in 1982, and even I know that's a load of you-know-what!!

Maybe Internet porn didn't exist 30 years ago, but video-based pornography and pornographic magazines have existed since the mid-20th or earlier... and erotic literature (which is closer to what we're actually discussing here - although still not really a fair description) has been around since at least ancient Greece.

I hate using Wikipedia as a source, but here's a good article you may want to peruse: Erotic literature - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the poster from a different thread, who read a book given to middle and high schoolers called, "Norwegian Wood" and defended that book as not graphic and non-objectionable for school kids? That was the book that described in great detail over the course of 3 or 4 pages, a sex scene between a 13 year old girl and a middle aged mother. The book carefully described the girl unfastening the woman's bra and feeling her breasts and performing oral sex on her and told how the woman liked the touch of the girl, comparing it favorably to that of her husband. Was it you who found that book which graphically depicted adult/child sex "not so graphic," and acceptable for use in the public schools? If so, then there is no need to get back with us on your opinion of just how "graphic" this book is because it will mean nothing.
