I love how people toss around the word "racist", even though the issue at hand has nothing to do with race.

I also love how people freak out at English being an official language, thinking they'll be tossed into the gulag for speaking their native tongue in their own homes.

It isn't. My ancestors had to learn the language.

Because there is no "national" language in the United States. And seeking to do so, in order to attempt to segregate and isolate another group of citizens...is against the law.

Like affirmative action laws?

There is nothing in the Constitution about a national language so there is nothing stopping the states from doing this. If there is nothing in a state charter or Constitution, then the counties in that state are free to pass these laws. Same with the cities if the county has no law stopping them.

What piece of legislation says there can be no national language in the United States?

Also, I think you are confused. These are "counties" within a state, not a federal mandate. If some county in Maryland wants to make English the official language of their county, so be it. If LA wants to make Spanish their official language, so be it. I'm just waiting for the illegals to take over California and suck up all of the tax money and bury that state. There might even be a civil war in California within the next 40-50 years at the rate they're going.

I'm sorry, but I live in Miami, where there are areas where absolutely no english is spoken....none.

I don't care what language you speak at home, but learn the language of your adopted country. This is self-isolation, not brought about by any governemnt.

This is not racist. Saying any one groups are too stupid to learn english, now THAT would be racist.

This.

If people who didn't speak English learned it, it would HELP them integrate into American society and they wouldn't be as isolated.

If they feel the need, they should. If they don't, they should be able to choose. That is fundamental to personal freedoms.
