Guantanamo detainees get new $750G soccer field

At a time of record deficits, a new soccer field for detainees at Camp 6 in Guantanamo Bay is just getting the finishing touches -- at a cost of $750,000 to taxpayers.

...
The detainees will now have three recreation facilities at Camp 6, which is home to "highly compliant" detainees who live in a communal setting.

In addition to an indoor recreation field and the existing outdoor recreation field, the new soccer field -- selected because it is such a popular sport with detainees -- is half the size of an American football field.

Weren't we supposed to be closing this facility?

I need to add this to the Obama's Millions thread.

Yes. The President even rolled out a plan for doing so. Then 90 Senators filled their pants in terror of the idea of the internees being transferred to Supermax facilities (which they can presumably overcome using their Special Terrorist Powers) and given something akin to a trial (which would turn farcical, because the CIA and military broke every rule in the book), so that got blocked right quick.

Gitmo is a classical GWB tarpit: The nation can only extricate itself with the greatest of trouble and there's no way of retaining dignity in the process.

Just like the Obama administration. Spend money on the terrorists and take away from our troops.

You have made quite a few claims.

Do you have anything to back them up?

Ridiculous. We should not only close the detention center, but the whole damn base should be dismantled and turned back over to Cuba. No reason for us to be there anymore.

Yes he did. I voted for Obama but I realize that he broke his promise on this.

I agree with you: he should have closed it and brought all those terrorists over here to the US mainland and to our prisons.
