So if all the electricity is going to power the cars what will power the lights? Or do we go back to whaling? Or is the government gonna subsidize a 2 million dollar windmill to hoist up in all our backyards too?
If someone has proposed the complete elimination of the use of fossil fuels in our lifetime it`s news to me.
The CVT is the only reason you are pushing 30mpg with that Jeep. CVT is more efficient that a manual 5 speed.
That's what I thought at first too, but there seems to be a lot of conflicting data. I definitely believe it's true for flat roads though. In the mountains it gets a little iffy since there are no gears to shift into, just higher RPM's.
It's easy to kill a CVT's fuel economy though. The RPM needle fluctuates a lot more easily than in an automatic or manual transmission.. nobody seems to get that. Went on a trip with a friend once and when it was his turn to drive - "Wow the CVT is going crazy trying to settle on an RPM value." Jeez. Doing it wrong!

I have not tried the mountains yet with my CVT powered car. I see your point, I would imagine those rpms really rev.
It appears the new Chevy Volt will get 38 miles on a full 10.5 hour charge in the new model instead of the outdated 35 miles per charge before. Whew that sets my mind at ease. Global warming should be a problem no more.
That 250K subsidy per car is well spent after all it appears.
I'm happy with my Jeep's high-20s mpg. Got it over 30 once. Although I feel like its CV transmission hurts its fuel economy a little.
I'm glad Chevy is making good stuff, but really, 38 miles on electric? It's 2012, we put a man on the moon in the 60s... Come on now.
But we didn't put him on the moon with an electrical rocket!
We left a huuuuuge carbon foot print at the cape!!
