Actually, if you take organic compounds (usually containing nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, etc.) and put them in a beaker and shoot them with a superheated spark (lightning), amino acids can form spontaneously. They can also spontaneously self-replicate, and apparently formed their own membranes at some point.

So yeah, even if it was an infinitesimally small chance, it happened and we are here today, and we can observe these things in a laboratory setting and can replicate them ourselves.
