For less than the dorm I am renting a three bedroom house and paying all the utilities. Maybe black students are just smarter than white students who are stupid enough to wanna be in a dorm.
Now this, I love! You've already learned way more than college can teach!

The fact of the matter is that Blacks and Latinos are on average poorer than whites and hence they make up the largest portion of the prison population. Prison populations are made up mostly of the poor. Since a larger precentage blacks and latinos make up the underclass in our society they will make up the bulk of the prison population. It's not that hard of a problem to figure out.

WASHINGTON - More than three times as many black people live in prison cells as in college dorms, the government said in a report to be released Thursday.

The ratio is only slightly better for Hispanics, at 2.7 inmates for every Latino in college housing. Among non-Hispanic whites, more than twice as many live in college housing as in prison or jail.

The numbers, driven by men, do not include college students who live off campus. Previously released census data show that black and Hispanic college students — commuters and those in dorms — far outnumber black and Hispanic prison inmates.

Exclamation get the facts

The issue is, the Unites States has kept African Americans in ghettos and slums for way too long. I do not believe it is the fault of the underclass. Laws, policies, systems have kept these people where they are by not proving the necessary means to get by. If you look at the FACTS, you will see that the african american popluation living below the povery line is outrageous. It has been proven that growing up without your basic human needs being met can lead to a higher risk of entering the legal system at a young age. What I am saying is, black, white, hispanic, ect if you live below the povery line, you are at a higher risk, it just so happens to be the African American population that is really suffering from this. It is not like they can go out and get jobs or careers because then they will no longer recieve the government assistance they need to survive. This is because to receieve assitance you must be well below the poverty line and if you come up above that line you lose it. However, if you work and lose the assistance, it is almost impossible to get a job that will provide the means to take care of a family.

This factoid was debunked a long time ago. I'm surprised someone was gullible enough to still get duped by it.

USATODAY.com - Debunking myths of black history

Young blacks: Prison vs. college
Myth No. 3: There are more black men in prison than in college.
This is an unfair comparison. According to a report issued Monday by the American Council on Education, 635,198 black men, the vast majority ages 18 to 24, attended higher education institutions in 2001, the last year for which this data is available. Of the 803,400 black men in the nation's state and federal prisons and local jails in 2001, just 189,200 were 18 to 24 years old. Nearly 76% of these black inmates were 25 and older, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported.
So the more accurate statement is this: There are more than three times as many college-age black men attending higher education institutions than are locked up in this nation's jails and prisons.

Here's an interesting follow-up to last night's post debunking Kerry's claim that there are more blacks in jail than in college (In fact, there are more than twice as many blacks in college than in jail)
Compared to their proportions in the overall population, blacks are slightly overrepresented in college, while whites are somewhat underrepresented.

umm its a false claim that the latins and blacks are more in prison than whites. they make up the most peopel so there will always be mroe of them in any segemtn of society whether its jail or college. and more whites in this country are poor than blakcs and latins again becausee of their larger numbers. And blacks and latins live in many diverse communities not just slums. everyone libves in slums. Most urban cities arent even majority black or latin. Take chicago or a seattle which has a balanced population of the major 3 ethnic groups and it also has middle , upper and lower class neighbourhoods of all groups. Most stigmas are just that, stigmas. To make one group not as respected as the other. Its not based on race but peopels circumstances and we all have common issues. we call it black on black crime but dont call it white on white crime...most peopel committ crime against there own no matter who it is.

The opposite. More crying on how America/White People are evil/genocidal/slavers/rapists/horrible and we need more whatever to correct it.

Man, we elected the first black president and the race screaming is a million times worse than even Bush's darkest moments.

We simply have to get away from this idea that high schools are, or should be, college prep institutions and that anyone who is not college prep material is a failure. I believe it takes an average IQ of at least 90 to comprehend this type of curriculum. The average IQ in this country is about 100 and there are 25% of us with IQs of 90 or less. This thinking dooms a full 25% of American society to failure before they even get started.

It seems to me that we used to have two tracks in high school. One was college prep and the other was oriented toward other life skills such as shop, the trades, etc. We used to have a lot of IQ and other kinds of ability and aptitude tests in order to help determine which students should be on which track.

The problem came about sometime in the 1970s with the emergence of the idea of disparate impact. Blacks with an IQ lower than whites (85 vs 100) did not do as well on these IQ tests. As a result more Blacks than Whites were steered away from the college prep track. So it was decided that the tests had a disparate impact on Blacks. The IQ and ability tests were eliminated and all students were placed on the college prep track.

A full 25% of the population and half of the Black population do not have the ability to succeed on this track. They are made out to be failures through no fault of thier own. Now instead of worrying about half of the Black population being eliminated from the college prep track, we are wringing our hands wondering about what is causing the achievement gap.

The answer is pretty simple folks. We have to have have another track other than college prep in which people can be successful. Then we have to put money into that effort in order to help the 25% of the population who are not college material. In order to do that we would also have to reinstitute IQ, ability and aptitude tests to find out who these folks are. Pouring more money into trying to make college material out of people who do not have this ability is a waste of money.

Assuming that everyone has the same ability is a myth and its hurting the folks we claim to be wanting to help.
