If only 5 million new jobs were created under Obama, instead he has created 5 million new enrolls in Social Security Disability
A record 5.4 million workers and their dependents have signed up to collect federal disability checks since President Obama took office, according to the latest official government data, as discouraged workers increasingly give up looking for jobs and take advantage of the federal program
Not to mention that when Obamacare gets enacted, it will make it so much easier for these people to get approved for SSD. Right now, with the extremely long wait times for a hearing (if the applicant is denied at the initial application and reconsideration phase), most applicants have a hard time continuing with their Dr visits and are denied at hearing for lack of medical records and opinions.
Now with Obamacare, they will continue to see their Drs and get forms filled out stating they are disabled so they can get SSD much easier.
Obama is so nice to help these people out like this!
According to this linked article (repeated elsewhere) when Obama took office in January 2008 there were 7,442,377 workers on federal disability.
In May 2012, there were 8,707,185 workers on federal disability.
Hence, net gain of 1,264,808 disabled workers during that span.
Add in the spouses of disabled workers receiving spousal benefits: 165,469.
Add in the children of disabled workers: 1,899,756.
Hence total receiving federal disability payments: 10,772,410.
However, the article does not cite how many spouses and children were receiving such in January 2008, so from that article one cannot be sure of what the 'true net' gain is.
Anyway, I know (since I work for Social Security) that it is not a net gain of 5 million or whatever.
Regardless, since the economy went down filings have gone way up. Of course, filing is not the same as receiving disability. Many applications are turned down.
Baby boomers are a big reason, of course. When you are in your 50s or low 60s and have lost your job, and no one will hire you, you do what you can, which for many mean filing for disability and claiming 'depression' or such.
I will note that here in north Texas we have a total of 2 investigators who go out to catch those committing fraud. We could use more, but we have no budget for it. I think that the $35,000 or so salary would be worth it for each new investigator.
I will also add that the new health care act does not make it 'easier' for a person to be found disabled, unless you mean that, since they (hopefully) will have health care, then they will have documentation for their condition. We have many claimant's who file for disability but have little to no medical records since they have no doctor and do not live by a county hospital.
And the disability ranks will continue to swell. In just the last month, almost 275,000 put in applications for disability benefits. Experts say that more people try to get on disability when jobs are scarce, and changes to eligibility rules enacted back in 1984 have made it far easier to qualify.
In addition, while job growth has been very weak during the recovery, the total number of people who've dropped out of the labor force entirely has exploded, climbing 7.3 million since June 2009, and IBD analysis of BLS data show. Some of them aged into retirement, but most either signed up for disability, stayed in school, moved back in with parents, or just quit looking for a job.
As a result, the "labor force participation rate" — the number of people who have jobs or actively looking for one compared with the entire working-age population — is now 63.8%, down from 65.7% in June 2009. This participation rate is lower than it's been in 30 years. In previous recoveries, the labor participation rate has almost always risen, not fallen.
It's interesting how the government will always try to spin its employment numbers. If someone drops out of the labor force then they just don't count any more in their eyes. They're not unemployed, they just don't work

Amerians just can't afford to live in America anymore on their own money. Sad state, isn't it ?
But, but , but Obama can pay all of us enough to live quite well......we no longer have to make our car payment , our house payments or pay for our health care. We can just let the Nanny State take care of us.
It can take a long time to receive disability after applying. If you are depressed due to not finding a job after three years of looking, very common these days, I don't think it would be approved.
