Actually, he would. This new federal tobacco tax, which increases taxes by as much as 2,500%, was passed in January 2009 by a completely controlled Democrat Congress. It was called the SCHIP Act. It was the very first new tax Obama signed into law, and it definitely effects those earning less than $250,000.
No, this is the just passed closing of a loophole by Congress.
Yes, does randomdude think alcohol should be banned? Actually it would make more sense since alcohol has far more of an impact on others than smoking does. Should unhealthy foods be subject to high taxes like tobacco?
Actually I dont think anything should be banned, but I also dont think it should create burden for others either.
We have criminal law to deal with actions incurred while under the influence already. What we dont have is any way to mitigate their huge burden on the medical system.
Smokers, the obese, alchoholics, people who engage in highly risky activities, etc, create huge medical bills that are shouldered by everyone.
Dont get me wrong, I have no problem with a universal healthcare system to cover everyone, however, that should not include people who are intentionally harming themselves.
Specifically, the "roll you own" cigarette stores. Yep, nothing like shuttering businesses and taxing those pinching pennies to collect higher tobacco taxes so he can spend more. How is that hypocrisy working for President "Choom"?
Now, I'm not a smoker but I have to wonder how it is a good idea to force businessses to close in this economy.
Before y'all say........it was passed by Congress; just remember Obama's promise not to raise taxes on those earning under $250,000.00. Understand if he had wanted to make an attempt to keep his promise he could have vetoed this entire bill.
Looks like the big bad lobbyists Obama said would have no influence in his White House have won another victory.
Quote:
She calls the law “un-American.” Smith argues that things aren’t equal for the small stores that can’t compete with larger tobacco companies.
“It’s quite clear that this is politicians and big tobacco working against small businesses,” Smith said.
It’s true the Altria-owned tobacco giant Philip Morris USA has been a strong backer of the federal legislation.
“They are cigarette manufacturers,” David Sutton, a Philip Morris spokesman, said. “And [they] should make tax payments, be regulated by the FDA and make state settlement payments just like other cigarette manufacturers.”

The reauthorization of the SCHIP Act of 2009 is where all the tobacco taxes were included.
A cigarette tax increase of 62 cents — bringing the total tax on a pack of cigarettes to $1.01. Also an increase of tax on chewing tobacco from $0.195/lb. to $0.50/lb., as well as exorbitant tax increases on other tobacco products.
I always knew that Democrats are all about less liberty and more central government oppression. In your world every adult would have to sign a waiver to do anything because it ALL has an impact on our health. Winning!
First thing, Im not a democrat.
Second thing, yeah, if you are doing something that is affecting me, I have the right to have input on it. You should not be given free reign to
1. Damage my health by second hand smoke
2. Raise my healthcare costs because you give YOURSELF throat cancer
How is that "liberty"? You are TRAMPLING my rights to preserve yours.

Sen. Max Baucus (D) was bought out by big tobacco.

Yes, you are a Democrat. With a truly warped mentality like that, you cannot be anything other than a Democrat.
Why do you not just come out and say: "Since I breath oxygen, I demand that everyone else on the planet stop exhaling CO2, since they are indirectly affecting the amount of oxygen I breath!" Only a liberal freak could be that stupid.
