If he's libertarian, than Im the tooth fairy. AT least Keith Olbermann admits he's liberal and not ashamed of his beliefs. I think Maher says he's Libertarian so as to appear open-minded, when in fact he himself knows he's a liberal.
Maybe he wants America to be an isolationist and he wants pot legalized?
His $1 million donation to re-elect Obama, for starters.
I don't think that's very good evidence. A lot of social libertarians prefer Democrats to Republicans. Republicans are much more restrictive in their views on sexual behavior, abortion, and drug use.

OK then, I don't really know--I don't listen to Maher, but the few times I've heard him he seems more like a Daily Kos-type than a libertarian. BTW I would have to disagree with your last sentence. Consider Obama's drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske. He is the former SPD chief (I'm from the Seattle area). He is adamantly opposed to pot legalization and even opposes the idea of 'medical marijuana.'
That's the thing about the Libertarian Party. There's a little something in it for everyone. That is the major reason it has never risen to prominence after being on the fringe for 40 years now.
I find it interesting that so many self declared Libertarians want to have a Republican style qualification test. That's very non-Libertarian.

Obama's drug czar is not representative of all Democrats, or even a majority. Polls show that Republicans are much less tolerant of personal drug use than Democrats. Here's a poll from Gallup to illustrate my point:

57% of Democrats support marijuana legalization; only 35% of Republicans do.
In a sense Obama's drug czar is by definition representative. The only two politicians of national prominence who have called for legalization (AFAIK) are both Republican: Ron Paul, and Gary Johnson.
I have to admit that the numbers from your poll are overwhelming, but sometimes the devil's in the detail. I am all for drug legalization, but not when we have the massive welfare state where the taxpayer is on the hook for the health consequences of drug use. Also, the numbers in the poll show that support is highest (pun intended) among 18-29 yr olds. I wonder how many of them are too young to have realized the connection between liberalism and nanny-statism.

No. If you want to know what Democrats and Republicans think about an issue, you take a legitimate poll. You don't pick out one or two leaders and assume they represent the majority, especially when they're not even holding an elected office.

There's a big difference between liberalism on social issues and liberalism on economic issues. Most people who favor legalizing marijuana would call their position a liberal one.
He's seems more a bisexual anarchist.
There are lots of anarchists who call themselves Libertarians.
Outside of The United States and Canada, the term "libertarian" is generally understood to be roughly equivalent to the term "anarchist". It's only since the narcissistic conservatism of Ayn Rand became in vogue, that the term "libertarian" was co-opted by political conservatives in North America.
With that said, it seems to me that Bill Maher is more of a classic liberal than anything else.
