As noted above, if one is not going to actively practice for some period of time, going on inactive or retired status makes sense, rather than meeting dues, CLE and insurance requirements. The license is not "lost" in that case. While rules vary from state to state about what's actually required (and based on the info in the factcheck link above it's relatively simple in IL, as it is in many states), if someone wants to reinstate their license at a later date, it can be done without going back through the admission process.

With the worst balance sheet in the nation on a debt-per-citizens basis, Illinois has tons of fees for attorneys who 'walk away' from the practice, like they do for everything else.

I don't think this thread went the way the OP planned.

Haven't you heard? Republicans aren't influenced by facts, they don't let them get in their way of building false dialogues if it helps to paint someone in a negative (and erroneous) light.

If the ARDC of Illinois took the Obama's law license then it was for an infraction.

The state did not TAKE either of the Obama's licenses. They voluntarily asked to have them set to an inactive status. It's not an unusual thing to do.

If the agency ARDC took the Obama's licenses , it was for an infraction .. one does not go through this agency to turn in their license. It is taken away. No handing them in ..

Did Barack have that job in January 2008 when he let his license expire? I thought he was voted in in November of 2008. I must have missed something here that you saw.

I am pretty sure the Obamas won't be practicing in Illinois again since they are selling their mansion there and probably moving to Hawaii after January 2013 according to what I have read more than one place.
