That's why you don't use modern day thinking but look up references to before. There is information available with the click of a mouse today. If its sufficently interesting for a reasonable cost Amazon will find you books written by historians you can sit and read. That is the problem. Modern day thinking is based on modern day. Two, three centuries ago the attitudes, and reality people saw was far different and that is also a part of the picture. You can't understand the past without studying it with and eye toward the mentality of all people then.
We can also assume that 200 years down the road people will look with disbelief and criticism at what we do today.

Of course. I think most people don't get that. I assume a lot of our assumptins today will be considered very ignorant. But the same applies. Look at the time. People only react to what they know. If some other standard is tacked on later, do you want to be judged by that when you don't know what it is?
Many, but not all of the slaveholders of color were indeed mulattoes.
Some of the slaves owned by blacks were their relatives, and their owners would have probably loved to free them but were legally prevented from doing so.
Although free blacks were fewer in number, there were proportionately more slaveholders among them.
Some free blacks who were having difficulty making a living actually sold themselves as slaves in order to have food and shelter.
The system that evolved into slavery began with the system of indenture andevolved into the system that was ultimately abolished. Indenture affected people of all ethnicities, but slavery as practiced in the US eventually became race based, with virtually all slaves being of African extraction.
The system was complex, with a hierarchy of whites, mulattoes, and blacks. We do need to view it in the context of the time. Surely it was an evil institution, and abolition was thankfully accomplished, but we have to realize that not all whites owned slaves, some blacks did own them, and some but not all slaveholders (both white and those of color) were abusive.

That may be true, but if you had to go through life listening to half truths to down right lies about what really happened in that time you would be as doubtful as I am. here is an example of what I'm talking about: Tenn. Tea Party Wants Slavery Removed From History Textbooks ...
Today's youth are diberately mislead regarding black history, in the past many were taught that blacks were slaves Lincoln free them, George Washington Carver created many uses for the peanut and MLK started the civil rights marches.
Hey conservatives: the founding fathers were not gods. They were fallible human beings, far from perfect. They were also a product of their times, as we are of ours, and they most certainly engaged in numerous reprehensible activities (as do many of us). No one is saying that the Constitution has to be abolished as a result.
Wow, US News and World Report really had to dig hard to get this one. They must be running out of good material to print. I thought that slavery was socially accepted back during the times of our founding fathers. Not that it is now or should be or that it was right. But you're taking a situation that happened back then and applying modern ethics to it. Why don't we go back and analyse ALL history and apply today's ethics and standards to it. Should prove to be interesting....

You forgot about the part about them being descendants of nubian olmecs & other "divine children of the sun".
