But it would be offsetted by the increase in public services such as law enforcement and firemen

It would have a significantly higher impact than taxing the rich which is a drop in the bucket.. This is just one of many links but either one you look at the percentage of hand-outs is very significant.
Dropping PBS has a smaller impact than taxing the rich, but yet mitt wants to do that instead

Speculative threads like this are basically dumb, working on the premise that assistance programs would be stopped cold turkey
How about thinking of the long term effects for the hopeful idea that most will be phased out

That would obviously be the only correct way to do it. Kinda like Canada has approached it.

Well no. Because they probably wouldn't be able to find a job if there weren't any or didn't have the skills. So they would have no money to pay for food and rent. And the landlords and food sellers would have less money too because there aren't any people using their social security payments for rent and food. So they would have to put their prices up or go bankrupt. See the cycle?
Social security at least keeps people in the market and other people benefit from selling them goods and services.

Thread is about welfare , not social security. One is your own money that was taken from you being given back to you. The other is money that was taken from other people being given to you. Big differance.

Sorry - different names in Australia.
What you call social security, we call aged and disability pensions etc.
Social security here includes unemployment payments or income security. So forget I used the words 'social security' and said welfare instead. Same thing goes.

In addition, in the same year, several states that also fund these programs separately cut their funding by 100% of near that.

What would be the result?
My guess is that most citizens (liberals included) would be very thankful that the 2nd Amendment is still intact.

Have these people ever considered getting jobs and becoming productive members of society?
