If this election is about social issues, the GOP is even more screwed than they are now. It's not 2004 anymore, and social conservatism is a dead issue for now.
Despite the desperation of the Romney camp to avoid talking about social issues, the fact remains that this election is primarily about those social issues and not about the economy.
Okay, so it isn't about the lack of economy and jobs and you say it is about abortion...
So how many of the 500,000 black babies killed by planned parenthood and others this year been addressed in a positive way this year for a change that reduces that massive number?
It's not about abortion, as much as Democrats are trying to make it about abortion. With the economy in shambles and a standing President who has demonstrated he has no clue how to fix it, repeatedly spreading fear about social issues has become a desperate tactic to change the subject and to scare women voters.
No matter how much you want to deflect, our economy is the number one issue to most Americans.
I know the right likes to make this out as a social issue, since they can only parrot things like "abortion stops a beating heart," or babble about 52 million dead Democrat babies... but here in the REAL world, those 52 million extra lives (plus their children/grandchildren) would have only added to our economic crisis. That might sound callous, but it is simply the TRUTH. That doesn't mean I'm a fan of abortion, but unlike some people, I am able to see beyond my emotions on this issue.
And as somebody who doesn't like abortion, but can also see the forest for the trees, I am in support of anything that reduces unwanted pregnancies - hopefully by preventing conception through comprehensive sex education & birth control availability, but also by supporting those who choose to terminate a pregnancy. At least in the case of those former two issues, I just can't fathom how a supposedly "pro-life" voter who is also concerned about the economy would disagree. They are seriously short-sighted and illogical, to say the least.
First, no one is looking to ban contraception - no one. Second, if you think abortion is an economic issue, you're right - but for the wrong reason: abortion is a multi-billion dollar business and the democrat party is bought and paid for by the abortion industry.
If those 52 million lives would have been a financial burden (how 52 million more earner/taxpayers are a burden is another question) how is it that 30 million more people in the health insurance pool aren't a burden?
Despite the desperation of the Romney camp to avoid talking about social issues, the fact remains that this election is primarily about those social issues and not about the economy. Other posters have noted that, for young people, social issues far outrank economic issues in importance.
Abortion was settled 35 years ago. Get over it. People will have abortions because the prohibition of abortions leads to illegal abortions not full-term pregnancies. Illegal abortions are horrible and deadly and they also spread disease in many 3rd world nations. Making abortions illegal does not do anything to lower the number of abortions, but it certainly raises the number of dead women.
If this election is about social issues, Obama will destroy Romney...Romney represents the 1950s, when abortion was illegal, interracial marriage was too, black people were relegated to a 2nd class status, women were nothing but property to men...Obama is better on those issues in the minds of most Americans even if he's far short of the vastly superior Gary Johnson. However, it's only about social issues to women and to right-wing Christians. To most other Americans it's about economics, and that's where these two men are able to be neck-and-neck right now.
Go to www.isidewith.com to see who you REALLY support. I bet you'll come out for Virgil Goode. Most people who think they should come out for Romney actually don't...the majority of Americans should either be supporting Obama or Johnson based on the results. I came out with Johnson being close to Jill Stein (though still above her) with Obama in the middle and Romney, Anderson and Goode all with less than 30% agreement with me.

The thinking isn't that, were abortion illegal, it wouldn't lead to more full term pregnancies; the thinking is that, were abortions more difficult to get, that it would lead to fewer pregnancies: a lot of women who blithely look upon abortion as a back stop (a minority of women to be sure) would rethink using contraceptives (or insist that their sexual partners did.)
Considering that the Supreme Court has ruled that abortion is legal, thinking that abortion is a big issue is just, well, ignorant.
The Court didn't make abortion legal.
Abortion was legal in 20 States (under various circumstances) before Roe v. Wade. The SCOTUS made it legal in all 50 as a matter of 'privacy' and imposed an arbitrary trimester calendar to determine when it can be done.

Obama doesn't have to spread fear about social issues like abortion and gay marriage......Romney is doing that all by himself......by vowing to overturn Roe v Wade given the chance and supporting an amendment to ban gay marriage.
And.....I will say it again......having an unplanned pregnancy is a MAJOR blow to a woman's economic circumstance......right up to and including possible job loss.
AND......Obama is going about improving our economy the right way.....not putting in policies that will cause a short spurt of job growth that can't be sustained.....followed by another big crash. The last thing we need is a Bush "do over" from the likes of Mitt Romney.
