People need to keep their guns either locked in a locker or have trigger locks on their weapons (for those who use them for home protection). These can prevent a child or a thief from using your firearm. Mental health/criminal background checks too.

I am not sure we think much about it because it has become a part of our everyday lives, but what is one of the most regulated things we all use every day? The automobile.

You have to pass a test get a license. You have to have a license to drive one. You have to have insurance (maybe gun owners should start to have to carry liability insurance?). You have to jump through hoops to get the car registered. You have to renew the registration every year. Is there a tighter control system around anything we use in our everyday lives?

And yet, cars are stolen, used in crimes, and kill people every day. Just like guns.

Clearly tighter 'gun control' using the automobile model (licensing, background checks, registration) is not going to work.

I don't have the answer. Maybe we start with banning the sale of things which are not 'sporting' oriented. If you don't use it for hunting game, it really isn't necessary, is it? Get rid of pistols and automatic rifles. Neither serves any real sporting purpose. For folks that want to target shoot with a pistol they can go to a range, check out a gun (maybe even their own gun, but it stays at the range) and blast away. At least it keeps some guns out of the public domain.

More an observation than a proposal, but we have to start somewhere. We adapt our laws in other areas, it is time to adapt in this area as well.

My question is this, for those who are against further gun regulations: What do you propose should be done -- if anything -- in terms of limiting gun tragedies?

We have read much on here from those who are in favor of more gun control, but I haven't read many answers from 'pro-gun' supporters.
If you want to ban guns, it makes sense that you would have more suggestions in that regard than somebody who doesn't.

I think this was primarily a mentally health issue. The guy shoot his mother and then a bunch of little kids who obviously never did anythign to him. I do think it underscores your politics if you make it primarily about firearms.

I don't own a firearm myself, so save your anti-NRA platitudes.

Yep. Violent movies, TV, video games. And a big lack of personal responsibility on behalf of parents, heroes, educators, leaders, and the press.

*Not all educators - or others mentioned - are lacking in personal responsibility. But it's a place to start.

So why not just rid of all regulations for cars.

No drivers license are needed anymore, because people commit crimes with them anyways

Gun control won't work b/c there is no way the government can confiscate every gun out there. All gun control does it make it tougher for good citizens to own guns and make Democrats feel good about themselves without doing anything that prevents future shootings.

We have enough laws. How about just enforcing some of them instead of cooking up new ones. This is not an issue about guns. It is an issue about psychos being permitted to roam freely in the community un-supervised.

As Bill Bennett said yesterday, their should be somebody at every school who is armed or can reach a firearm.
