Incompetence is too easy a word and lets too many people off the hook. As Real News asked, where is the chain of command? Not that all in that chain could be incompetent.

You're going to compare the ambassador making a specific request for additional security for a specific building in war torn Libya and being denied to a generic intelligence warning that Al Qaeda may strike somewhere in the 3 million square miles of the continental United States before the war on terror ever started? Come on now.
Bush was given multiple warnings from the CIA and ignored every one of them. Bush didn't as much as look into these warnings further.
If Bush had heeded even one warning, perhaps airport security would have been increased thereby preventing the 9/11 tragedy that unfolded while Bush read a children's book!
Both. Our intelligence community needs to stop withholding info in these cases.
While I am the first to admit that many things that our intelligence agencies have been involved in needed public exposure, I am not naive enough to hold believe that intelligence agency that don't withhold information are very intelligent or affective. Maybe we have to take a a tip from the British who refer to their intelligence agency as the secret services before Americans get it.

What for god's sake is there to "cover-up"? It is hardly a secret that individuals and groups of individuals seek to do harm against Americans so whether the attack was planned months ahead of time or was a case of Akmed and Joe Islamic deciding over a cup of coffee to gather up the boys for a little late night attack on the U.S. consulate is pretty freaking irrelevant. So if you think that it was a "cover-up" what the frack was covered?
That's not partisanship that's freaking common sense.
PS - this is one liberal who didn't criticize Bush for 9/11 or who placed the sole blame for the response to Katrina on his doorstep and at the time gave qualified support for him.

Gov cover ups have happened numerous times through the years sadly.
When they ask for it the answer is a swift YES and nothing else.
Assuming you are referring to the Embassy in Tripoli, ah no, just because you ask, just as other embassies asked for additional security the answer is not an automatic YES. If it were and the Benghazi got the 3rd Infantry Brigade as security, and a more successful attack occurred in Cairo, you would be spouting the same nonsense about how Cairo didn't get the fraking 3rd Infantry Division. There are finite resources and infinite number of threats.
