Looking at the homework, the word Fat was used because it is a 3 letter word which the children of that age could read and understand. The other words on the page were nut, mad, and sun.

Could there have been another 3 letter word that could been used, of course. To assign some sinister plot to indoctrinate children is a bit much.

OMG...how ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with the assignment.

But why is this a liberal/conservative issue? Especially if the school district is supposedly "liberal" itself.

When not accompanied by derogatory remarks or tone of voice, why is it so horrible to call fat, fat?
Tall is tall, short is short, blonde is blonde and fat is fat and facts are facts.

Seems to be a bit of a stretch to try to turn this political.

Those are taught after social issues are addressed.
Like this past election, social issues trump all.

I don't see what the problem is.

Fat is fat. Some people are fat and some are not. It is a a fact of life and pretending it doesn't exist doesn't change that. And from what I can see from the picture in the linked article, there is no social commentary attached. Rather it is about learning the word and associating it with a fairly accurate picture. And there are plenty of other words on the worksheet too.

Do the whining neo-cons in this thread want to pretend that fat doesn't exist?

The picture is offensive as it depicts a fat girl.
A better picture might have been a hippopotamus in a tutu might have been more appropriate.
Remember kids at that age still have baby fat which many grow out of as they age.

She is learning to identify the word fat with another person.

All fat people are not fat by choice and now they are all becoming labeled as "obese".

FWIW the CDC finished a study. Obesity peaked in 2003 and has been on the decline since.
Their study went from 2003-2010. Some states are in better shape now (literally) than in 2003.

But is this study all over the major MSM sites ? We have laws being enacted today to combat this "crisis" that peaked 10 years ago.

The lesson could have been done better with a different picture representing the word "fat".

Here's a famous one that is accepted and a good choice to represent "fat" and doesn't demean or influence thinking about your peers.

Because the perceptions is that liberals are well educated and conservatives are uneducated. Even though that is far from the truth. It's mostly southern and mid-western conservatives that lack education (with exceptions, of course). Most other conservatives are reasonably educated.

People tend to relate all education related thread to politics.

Fat Albert should be banned!

Nevermind. Whoever did that would be instantly accused of racism.

That was the creation of Bill Cosby.
