Micromanage? Nope, Bush initiates ****ed-up policies and then leaves his mess behind...as usual. He was in charge long enough to promote policies that enriched his family.
I don't care what support it received...it failed and the link I posted even showed that an advocate for it then, admits now that it failed.

I now find that this approach to my profession is not only devalued, but denigrated and perhaps, in some quarters despised.

After reading this, one wonders why would anyone want to teach your bratty rotten kids who their parents have taught to despise teachers and look down on them. No doubt your kids prefer to spend their time shooting things and think learning math and evolution instead of Invisible Sky God is worthless.
My daughter passionately wants to be a teacher and is a junior in college studying for exactly that. I worry every day about parents like the dumbed-down, ignorance-worshipping cretins on this board who blame everything they hate -- which is everything, actually -- on teachers.
My aunt and uncle (just a few years older than me) retired two years ago. Both said the same. He (my uncle) was considered a "right wing nut job" because he was a decorated 101st Airborne Ranger who served in Vietnam. In fact, the guy is very middle of the road politically and calm. However, he said he had to "edit" his social studies texts, as they were full of revisionist history and outright lies. His students loved him; he has several flags from Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan that flew over camps sent to him by former students. Teachers like this are essentially gone.
The only hope for real education in America is home schooling and the parochial system. However, even in the parochial system, there are left wing loons. I had to call one of the high school teachers and ask him not to present "global warming" and "the dangers of fracking" as "fact" in his curriculum! Given my academic past and publication record, he could not claim the bridle of "science" as a justification for presenting his unproven, left wing opinion. At least in that system, we have the power to muzzle idiots and have them stick to education and scientific fact, not leftist opionion.
No one gives a damn your "uncle" served in the military the fact that he took it upon himself to change what was written in text books to his students is a disgrace and the fact that you seem to be proud of him is rather disgusting. Would it have been fine with you if he considered george washington a terrorist ? How about Able Lincoln as the worst person ever? Home schooling is a joke and is limited by what the parents know and can teach properly, also by keeping your kid home he/she ends up lacking the ability to work as a team member and develop friendships that could last a long time.
Homeschooling is a disservice to students, and parochial School ?? I guess if you have the money and have no problem with sending your kid to a school where one of the classes would be bible/torah study I suppose that would be fine. But then again if I had kids I wouldn't want to send them to a school related to a corrupt religion that hides pederasts and promotes them to positions of power.

I hope you saved some room for hate because the new program RTT (Race to the Top) fully places the blame for failing students on the teachers and makes that part of their performance rating.
