In all fairness, the fate of the city wouldn't change in the end if a conservative was suddenly placed in charge. Too much lib for too long and the results are a toxic cesspool of failure. Tear it down, pour cement over the mess and build something viable in it's place. I'm gonna miss their coney dogs though

It's asked in another thread why people dislike unions. Here is a perfect example.

Quote:
Ed McNeil, a representative for the city's largest union, AFSCME Council 25, said the rising legacy costs are nothing new and as the city continues to privatize and reduce its workforce, it is losing funds that could have been paid back into the system.

"If you stop hiring people to pay into the system, then your money is gone," said McNeil, whose union represents about 2,000 city workers. "This is a 'set up to fail' situation."
Where does the money come from to pay these employee's to pay into the system? Detroit has no money.

Wall Street bondholders will be asked to take a haircut to relieve a city that shelled out $133 million in debt payments last year on a $1.23 billion budget.
Obama will leave the country with a worse ratio than that.

Lots of places are governed by liberals yet don't end up like Detroit. Was it liberal policies... or is Detroit what happens when incompetent, corrupt officials preside for decades over an unproductive, criminally inclined population?

It also doesn't help that Detroit put all its focus on the auto industry and then didn't try and stay competitive with foreign companies when they began making better vehicles.

California will be just fine, it is the highest producer of our country's GDP, unless you forgot.
