If i notice that you're following me around in a car and you jump out of the car and head towards me, your best bet wouldn't be to get within arm's length of me unless you're a cop or i know you from somewhere. That, or you'd better be damn quick in identifying yourself before you get close.
If you get within arm's length, you're gonna swallow your teeth. You're not getting the first punch in...i am.
That's only common sense.
Wow- A little agressive, aren't we? If someone was following me in a car, what would I do? Nothing. If someone flips me off or honks at me, what would I do? Nothing. If someone got out of their car and started destroying my car, I would either let them smash the car (my cars are very nice, but not worth killing or dying over) or drive away. If someone was ransacking my house (I have three hidden 12 gauges), I would let them do so, allow them to leave, and keep what they took. I would not shoot anyone who was not directly threatening me or my family. Things can be replaced.
I have a concealed carry. If you attempted to assault me, I would shoot you dead- no hesitation, no question. I can see now how this Martin/Zimmerman thing came about- hot heads.
PS- In hand to hand combat, "punching" is NOT the correct form of assault, as you are leaning forward and off balance. We used to "play" with "martial arts experts" in the wrestling room all the time. They were easy to take down and subdue within 30 seconds. Your "punch" would result in your face in the concrete and a broken arm. I remember when we "rolled" five members of the college basketball team (two of which went to the NBA) when they got a little agressive. We stole thier shoes (it was winter), thier car keys, money, and jewelry after some physical persuasion. We threw thier things in the river.
If you wanna ask me for directions, ask me from the damn car...parked. Or if you're gonna approach me after i've NOTICED you following me, it's common damn sense to at least say something before you approach me so that i don't get the wrong idea about your approach.
Damn..where are you people from? It's normal where you're from for people to follow you around and then approach you without at least some kind of greeting or announcement of intent? That's not normal behaviour to me.
I am with you but once the guy you are hitting yells for help you better stop. At that point you are delivering a beat down detroit style and not defending yourself.
And the other party is dead.
How convenient that we only had one side of the story.
That's just it. We heard one side of the story, and that side came from a guy on trial for murder. Just what version of events do you think he's going to give?
I'm a woman. If someone was following me on a dark street, I'd run myself, and if that wasn't working, I'd stop, start screaming bloody murder, and fight with everything I had. Why would someone follow you in a car and start coming after you if they didn't mean to hurt you? My bet is that Zimmerman was sure the kid was up to no good, and wanted to tackle him to hold him for the cops so he couldn't get away, even thought the police told him to stop what he was doing. Trayvon Martin was a kid who had an adult man following him and chasing him, and I'm guessing he was scared out of his mind. It would be perfectly reasonable to believe that Zimmerman was a rapist, or a robber, etc. I would hope my teenage boys would fight with everything they had to protect themselves if someone was following them under similar circumstances.

This coming from someone who makes the argument that a scared 17 year old who was chased by a man following him in a car at night was way out of line for defending himself.
If you follow someone in your car and then get out once you can no longer continue from the car, that's menacing.
no it isn't.

If a person speeds away from you but you do not slow down and in fact speed up to follow them, that's menacing.
did that happen here? nope.

If you pursue someone without identifying yourself early on (be it verbally or by uniform), that's menacing.
no it isn't.

It's not that Zimmerman innocently crossed paths with Trayvon and then continued to go in his general direction. If I was in Trayvon's place, I would have thought that Zimmerman was targeting me for a mugging or rape.
you must go thru the average day in a state of absolute terror.

I was raped when I was Trayvon's age. I was molested while studying abroad, on the street at night. Many of my female friends can say the same thing. I don't go through life in a state of terror, but I go through life prepared to defend my life and prevent extreme physical and emotional harm coming to me again.
There were no witnesses, and what forensic evidence?
Didn't watch the trial huh?
