At least they should name the contest after the boy, in recognition of his outstanding achievements.

I assume he is home-schooled. The indoctrination centers would be a waste of time for this bright child. They should at least be giving decent prizes, like a trophy, a family vacation, or lunch with a governor. I would think this lad deserves a scholarship.
When did we become a country that discourages excellence and outstanding achievement?
I just wonder how they prove that they have actually read the books they claim. This kid is amazing! He inspires me to read more.
Is he a speed reader?

The phenomenon, though exaggerated, of making everyone a winner is driven by certain parents, not coaches, psychologists, educators or others.

I read the article in its entirety, something I think a few posters on here failed to do. I also read the comments. Some good points were made.

I am usually OK with awards that have some objective criteria, such as number of books read. But...as one comment pointed out, there are ways to "game" this and read a lot of short easy books, as opposed to fewer but longer and more difficult books. A couple of commenters gave good suggestions for changes in the rules, rather than just drawing names out of a hat.
