... and if it wasn't for conservatives' support for needlessly punitive mandatory minimum sentences for possession-related drug convictions, then they'd have the space to lock up muggers, robbers, burglars, etc and keep them locked up.

Blaming the conservatives for the idiocy of drug laws is a fallacious argument. Both sides of the aisle have been involved in the War on Drugs, and both sides have a share of the blame for the consequences.
