There is an oft-repeated liberal lie about Ronald Reagan and a campaign speech he gave in Philadelphia,MS. in 1980. I've seen it posted here on CD several times. It's one of those memes that some lying liberal concocted, and useful idiots dutifully spread around the internet.

The basic claim is that Reagan proved himself to be a racist by kicking off his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where 3 civil rights workers had been murdered in 1964. The crucial evidence that convicts Reagan of racism, according to libs, is that he expressed support for "states' rights." States' rights=racism, according to these libs.

In her book 'Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama,' Ann Coulter completely debunks this meme. First of all, it wasn't the kickoff of the campaign. Back then we did not have 24/7 campaigning. The speech was Aug 3, 1980. The campaign kickoff was not until labor day, in September. Secondly, the speech was not in Philadelphia, MS. It was at the Neshoba County fairgrounds, seven miles away. Michael Dukakis also gave a speech at the Neshoba County fairgrounds in 1988. Did that make him a racist too?

Reagan had always been a proponent of states' rights, going back to his days as CA governor. I remember that even many libs supported the idea of decentralization in the 60's and 70's, but later declared it to be racism. LOL.

By the 'logic' of these libs, as Coulter hilariously notes, we have a lot of problems, for example:

I've never seen Reagan as a racist.

I've always thought he was more of a gun grabber who had no problem giving guns to radical Muslims, and pro union when he belonged to one, yet anti union when he left the union

Who's so offended exactly? Reagan is enough of a documented flip-flopper that no one ought to waste their time trying to paint him as a racist w/ weak indirect evidence.

Many have claimed to take offense, including right here on CD (see post #7: "I will never forget that."

It's a well-worn lefty meme. It's a well-worn false cry of 'call them racists!'

The Reagan Administration was the most corupt administration in American history.

Reagan also created huge deficits and grew Americas national debt with tax cuts for the rich (or as he called them trickle down economics and the supply side formula.)

Why are you glamorising and protecting R. Reagan ??

Off topic. The topic is a debunked claim that Reagan was a racist because he gave a speech in support of decentralization at a county fairgrounds.

Nonetheless your points are wrong. The most corrupt admin in history is the present one (Fast and Furious, IRS scandal, Solyndra...list goes on). We had one prez impeached and another forced to resign in the last half-century, neither of whom was Reagan.

Reagan's deficits were due to military spending, which won us the cold war and freed millions from totalitarian oppression. Reagan oversaw a decrease in domestic spending. What have Obama's ever-greater deficits bought us? A gargantuan mess in foreign policy, and an economic morass domestically.

The 1980 election was the first election where I was old enough to vote.

I don't remember anyone calling Reagan a racist at that time.

Who exactly is making this claim?

The claim from the left is that Reagan was a racist due to this speech. I don't suppose any lefty trolls will care to confront that argument directly.

Ronald Reagan opposed racism long before he entered public life, and long before it was cool:

Reagan stood against racism when libs were promoting eugenics.
