It's closed off because tea party thugs in the House threw a hissy fit and demanded that they get their way or else they would shut everything down. If there are not the people there to patrol and watch over these places, the public can't use them.
We've now reached the ultimate level of stupidity: conservatives demanding to SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN unless they get to dictate their will.... and then getting all hissy when they discover that things were actually shut down.
Really? There are more patrols now than ever. If that is the only excuse to barricade it, then this is an EPIC FAIL on the part of the Administration.
This is like the government arguing that the sequester forced them to cancel school trips to the White House but then arguing that we should arm the terrorists in Syria.
While Obama spent $60 million on a trip to Ireland and Africa.
Finn, we're not talking about a park here. This is an open-air memorial, paid for with donations and taxpayer money. It has always been accessible because it never had gates around it, nor guards or tour guides. They even put a barbed-wire reinforced fence to keep 90-year old men who fought in that war from seeing their own memorial, thinking the GOP would get the blame. I think they overplayed their hand on this one.
It would be nice if the government protected our borders half as vigorously as they have this memorial.
In complete agreement with all of the above. Thank you.

Another person who has never been to many of these places. I have to admit that I am astounded at how well people behave when they are there. You can go to the Jefferson Memorial at night and not see another person anywhere. There are no gates up. There is no entry fee. Just you and the Memorial if you are there late.
Why won't Mohamed al-Boehner allow the House to vote on a clean continuing resolution bill???
Obviously he is scared ****less of losing his Speakership. He has proven to be a wuss, a guy of zero integrity, zero patriotism and zero gonads. He does not realize that he has already forfeited any credibility along with the respect that goes with the position, so I guess the title of his position is worth clinging to for him, despie the fact that he is Speaker in name only right about now. Coward!
