None of the other shutdowns lasted more than one day, none of the other shutdowns approved back pay while the shutdown was in progress, this is the record.

Never has there been a shutdown where government workers were sent home for more than a day, there is no record of 800,000 workers being sent home for this period of time. There is no record of a shutdown removing a major program that was already approved being defunded and workers were never approved for back pay in the middle of a shutdown. Please don't quote the Wikipedia version.

I've given you plenty of grief and you've deserved it but I do agree with you here. People don't speak out nearly as much when their administration does it. That's the reason I supported Grayson in Florida. He isn't afraid to speak out.

You need to go back and read the history of government shutdowns because you are totally wrong.

My husband was in military during the last one too. It lasted a long time - three weeks. It was over Christmas and it ruined a lot of people's holidays.

This is the 12th shutdown since 1981. The last and longest shutdown occurred from December 1995 into January 1996 under the Bill Clinton administration and spanned 21 days. It came just a month after a six-day shutdown in November 1995.

Before the 1980s, if Congress could not pass a budget, federal employees continued operating as usual, even while waiting for a spending bill to pass. Once it did, that bill would retroactively fund the spending gap.

But in 1980, Jimmy Carter's last year as president, then-attorney general Benjamin Civiletti issued a legal opinion saying government work cannot continue until Congress agrees to fund it. Civiletti later clarified the law to mean only "essential" government services could continue without a spending bill.

During Ronald Reagan's presidency from 1981 to 1989, shutdowns were relatively common, but none of them lasted more than three days, and many occurred over a weekend.

Even got a liberal source for you.

I do believe you are correct that this is the first time they have voted to pay federal workers during the shutdown, it the past it was done after it was over.

Government workers were never sent home for 21 days, at least not 800,000 not in 1995 and not in the 1970's.

It just burns me up whenever I hear some self righteous politician hem and haw about federal workers making 100k when they work less than students have class. Just to let many of you know the average federal worker makes less than 50k easily and that depends on where they live and what they do. Those "politicians" put a freeze on cost of living increases for going on 4 years now but yet they are still getting paid to do what?

There actually is a website that shows what most fed workers made in 2012... it is a public website -- only those in security sensitive areas are not shown... you can look up by location, agency, name, etc...

Search Federal Pay Rates
