Apparently being a "Christian conservative" means I'M A FLAMING RACIST.

In any case, I don't know what article Nirvana Guy read, but I'm with the rest of you- it's certainly not what I read. But then again, Nirvana Guy is the type of ignorant person who would probably walk up to me in a mall to tell me to stop speaking Spanish or Portuguese and "go back to my country" when my family founded the Massachusetts Bay colony and Spanish is my 2nd language, Portuguese my 4th. They both are just vastly superior linguistically to English, so why not speak it?

A law or policy mandating that people speak English on the job is stupid. There are many situations where speaking English would be irrelevent. Employers shouldn't be enforcing English-only policies unless it is relevent to the work they need done. If one wants to speak Spanish, Italian, Russian, or even Esperanto with co-workers, it really shouldn't matter that much, just as long as a job is getting done.

What angers me about this article is that Republicans want to push to keep the status quo on the AMT even though they realize millions of middle class Americans are getting shafted. Go Nancy!

Pelosi is an idiot. Reid is an idiot. The democratic controlled congress is a joke.

soooo.... If I go through a McDonald's drive through, and the person at the order window will only speak Spanish to me, they should be able to keep their job? Even though the majority of America speaks English? That McDonald's will not get my money if I cannot reasonably order without having to go learn a foreign language before hand.

What would happen is they would stick the English speaker at the drive through and the other guys would be preparing and making the food. It works today all over the place. Gives the food preparers an incentive to learn another language.

Except it does not happen. I have a very hard time understanding any of the McDonnalds drive through workers in Boulder Colorado for this very reason. the majority of the workers at one in paticular DO NOT speak english, or speak very very few words of english. It makes for a frustrating morning getting any order right. I now do not go to this Mcdonnalds because it takes me 20 min. to get my order the way I had origonaly ordered it in English.

Right on !!!!!!!!!!! The SOP's (Socialist Progressives) are about the only ones
who like her as evidenced by some of the above comments. Her approval rating is around 11% according to most polls. I also understand that she uses
illegals to work in her vineyards so it makes sense she wants to force spanish on other workers. As far as her compromising on certain bills to help
us not pay taxes, give me a break. The Dems are getting ready to pass the
the mother of all tax bills right now.

Depends on where you work i guess. I work in a factory, communication is a must.... How do I train a nonenglish speaking person? If they are Thai I can get my point accross but not spanish..
Last year we had some temps who were mexican with no english ability. They caused several near miss accidents because signs were not bi-lingual. I think it unreasonable to expect a corporation to install multi-lingual signs. It is reasonable to expect people to understand the language of the land.
For the person who thinks that its fair to make the english speaker work the drive thru. Why? Maybe they prefer to work the counter or the kitchen instead. Now you discriminate against them because they don't speak spainish in the USA when our accepted language is english.

I think some of the "SOP"s (which I always learned meant Standard Operating Procedures) are just pointing out people can dress up any issue to fit their agenda.

If people have not bothered following up on the tax proposals, the Democrats are trying to help the Middle Class getting hit with the ridiculous AMT tax, costing them thousands or tens of thousands a year, and transferring more of the tax burden to some of the very rich by closing existing loopholes for hedge fund managers. That gets my support. Which was what the whole issue was wrapped around in the first place.

As far as who works in the back of the restaurant and who gets the order, whatever, I could really care less. Sometimes it is hard to understand the Arab guys at 7-11s, the Mexican and Chinese guys working fast food joints, never really bothered me very much personally. I always manage to come away with my order.

The House yesterday narrowly approved a $73.8 billion measure to protect millions of families from the alternative minimum tax and offer new tax breaks to middle-income homeowners and low-income parents, offset by tax increases that would land primarily on wealthy Wall Street financiers.

The 216 to 193 vote came after a fiery debate that divided Democrats and energized Republicans, who assailed proposed tax increases that Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Tex.) called "an assault on free enterprise." Democrats countered that they were only closing tax loopholes on super-rich private-equity and hedge fund managers in order to live by a pledge of fiscal responsibility.

We planted the flag for fiscal responsibility . . . as we gave a tax cut to the middle class," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
