Don't be surprised if Putin doesn't annex Brighton Beach as many of the expats living there admire Putin and if they felt persecuted they might prompt Putin to send in the troops prior to annexation. Who would stop him?

I thought the video was rather thought-provoking. It goes to show that humans-ALL humans-are natural empire builders. It doesn't matter to which nation-state they give allegiance, nation-states always endeavor to expand their borders. Mongols, Russians, Germans, British, and, yes, even the fledgling United States Of America, with its belief in "Manifest Destiny"!
ALL were expansionist!
Of course Russia wants to return to the glory days of the Union, hopefully without repeating the mistakes of the USSR.

The Crimeans wanted to join Russia and voted accordingly. This is the sad consequence of Western democracies not being able to differentiate themselves from Russia’s oligarchy. Now, like Russia, Europe and America have domestic spying programs and political repression. Also, American style capitalism has been shown to be utterly corrupt in that the bankers who caused the global economic collapse have not been imprisoned and in fact are even being protected from prosecution here in the United States. Why would the Crimeans, who see even the home of democracy Greece in economic ruin, want to join the EU?
