I suppose the OP has a point.

What is the GOP's alternative? Debtors prison?

Seems to me that some English dude wrote a book about this topic a couple hundred years ago.

Of course the solution to this is always to make welfare recipients even more miserable than they already are so that they'll see low-paying jobs as better than nothing, instead of raising the minimum wage to make working seem more worthwhile.

Today, because we have NOT generated as many jobs as need be, the states ran out of UI money some years ago and are in debt to to the fed billions of dollars each.

NC, I believe QUIT paying any more because they feel that they cannot pay back the fed AND pay UI.
NC did reduce the maximum UE payment. It was way out of wack with the average earnings and cost of living in the state. Prior to the reduction, the maximum in NC exceeded the maximum in California, a state with a much higher cost of living. It was reduced from $535 a week to a more realistic $350.

In the years since this went into effect, the state has paid back the 2.7 Billion it owed the Federal Government.

Think about that, and ask yourself why other OECD countries have REGRESSIVE tax structures and LESS income inequality.

Other countries don’t have a "47%"

Thank you for describing one more reason American low-wage workers need lower housing regulation - how else do you expect them to afford housing under the European model of regressive taxation?

Low-wage Europeans rent smaller apartments/rooms and/or have one or more roommates.

Childless American low-wage workers live with multiple roommates, where not prohibited by law.

I rent a room in a house with 8 people; having moved out of a house with 10 people.

American housing is larger than European housing because American developers build for the American middle class market, not for the European market or even for the American low-wage market.

Less than 4% of the population is on welfare. If you include food stamps, welfare spending jumps to 50 million people and just over $500 billion per year (non-snap welfare is $131 billion).

So why is food stamp usage so high?

Corporations are the biggest receivers of welfare. We pity them at the expense of pay our citizens a livable wage. We have millions of folks on food stamps because they aren't earning enough to live. Corporate welfare is a far bigger problem in this country than public welfare. Create a strawman thread about that.

Also, welfare spending is on the rapid decline since 2010. Welfare spending mirrors the unemployment rate (for obvious reasons).
You never tire of the "corporate welfare" red herring. Keeping your own money is not welfare unless your contention is that the government owns all resources and only doles it out as it chooses. This is such a tired argument with no factual basis. Find something else. Alien reptile overlords maybe, it's in the same category.

could it be that some of the $61k goes to paying those hefty government and bank fee's to distribute the money? I suppose you think it's distributed without cost.
