Probably to get some other laws passed. You know, the old 'we'll support what you want to do as long as we get what we want' tactic. That's called compromise, something the cons believe Obama never does.
One should never compromise when it comes to the possibility of reducing the rights and liberties of American citizens. We'll agree that the Patriot Act and the other programs with it were a big mistake.

Without question, Barry's election is our very worst mistake in this great country's history. This is why we need to learn more about our elected officials when they plan to seek higher office. In Barry's case, he was influenced into this thing by Bill Ayers.

Most slaves were treated very well by plantation owners. There is a common misconception they were all treated poorly & whipped. Writing inaccuracies into history was America's worst mistake.
Some slaves were treated well, but the whippings and beatings weren't made up. The average lifespan of a slave was around 45 years.
It's pretty embarrassing that the USA was basically the last Western nation to ban the practice. No one should still be trying to rationalize such a barbaric practice. The African slave traders wouldn't have been able to sell their captives if people hadn't been so eager to buy.

The US has had a few miscalculations and errors in its history, but perhaps the most impulsive, ill conceived action in modern history has been the election of Obama into the White House.
We have a man in the White House with-
no executive experience
dubious far left and communist associates and role models
very little experience at all in politics
questionable work ethic in previous academic jobs
an unknown academic background which is still hidden from the public
a notion that the US is no better than any other nation
a vow to carry out the "dreams of his father" who was a marxist
The world is a more dangerous place due to the power vacuum provided by a weak leader with no effective foreign policy and "red lines" which are crossed and not questioned. The average American is poorer than in any time, other than the Great Depression.
Have we learned our lesson yet?
Our worst political mistake was electing R. Reagan, he started the supply side tax cuts and corporate deregulation. Reagan gave corporations and the rich huge tax cuts (and this grew our national debt to dangerous levels.)
And our next biggest mistake was electing GW Bush. He gave the rich tax cuts and attacked Iraq for nothing (and this grew our national debt to dangerous levels.)
Can't speak for others, but my beliefs have remained pretty consistent. Didn't support those policies then. Don't support them now. So again, more broad generalizations on your part on what you think that all conservatives think.

Now conservatives are attempting to have amnesia about 2001-2009 when they cheerleading for the Patriot Act, the idea of pre-emptive war/Iraq War, torture, Gitmo/indefinite detention, an endless war on terror.
The anti-muslim we should racially profile muslims sentiment that was rampant in conservative media. The anti-immigrant/border security mexicans might be muslim terrorists fear mongering that occurred.
These are the kinds of freedom stealing authoritarian militaristic policies conservatives were clamoring for and cheerleading to enact.
