Those unwilling/unable to adapt to change tend to blame government, too.
Most manufacturing jobs were offshored.

It's non-manufacturing jobs that are being automated now.

we as a nation will never fully recover economically. There will be some ups and downs, but the trend of people not working, and a disappearing middle class won't go away in our lifetimes, unless something like a world war or a major disaster happens.

Basically, our political system doesn't work anymore. There really is no way to drastically change anything, and drastic change is the only thing that can fix the problems we're facing. We have grown too large and diverse as a nation, and our capitalistic ways simply don't work in a society like ours.

Honestly, if they had "fought him all the way" then Reagan would have been impeached over selling weapons to terrorists in Iran and using USAF planes to import drugs to American cities to support terrorists in central America. More than 50% of the population wanted Reagan impeached, the Democrats had the votes to impeach him, but Tip O'Neal thought it would send a bad precident to impeach a president for any reason. He actually gave cover to Reagan and blocked impeachment. Compare that to today's dirt bag Republicans, they want to impeach Obama before he has even done anything, so badly, they're constantly lying and making up fake "scandals" which have no basis in fact.

Also in 1982-1984 Reagan wasn't very popular at all as the recession had really gutted his popularity. That's why Dems thought they'd win for sure and that's why they went with such a far leftist candidate. Reagan only started to pull ahead in the polls after Mondale made several public screw ups.

You can try to pretend that baby boomers getting old and retiring is a partisan thing but the reality is it would be happening no matter which party is in power. The labor participation rate has been decline since the year 2000. We knew this was coming for decades, there is a demographic bulge which is entering their retirement years, Bush Sr was talking about it coming way back in the early 1990's and it finally hit us. It's just a mathematical reality and no amount of stupid partisan games will change it. The only way to make the old folks keep working is if they're so financially insecure they feel they have to but I, for one, am happy that the elderly can retire with dignity. I guess that's just me though judging by the posts of the right wing nutjobs.
: smack:

Some of you folks really need to think before you post!

Did it NOT occur to you that the labor participation rate when "Reagan took office" was due in part to a worthless President named Jimmy Carter?????

Did it NOT occur to you that the misery index was through the roof, which is WHY Reagan was elected in the first place?

And yet here you are trying to equivocate Barack Obama's nearly 6 years as President and nearly 6 years of economic failure with that of not even the first DAY of Reagan's Presidency?

: smack:

This forum has gone to hell. There's not one competent liberal on the whole ******* thing.

So you count babies and children as unemployed Americans, and count retiring people as "leaving the workforce" to rally the troops against Obama? You're out of your mind.

No, it was only after the economy started turning around.

My dad is retired Navy, served his country and earned his pension. Which my guess is there are plenty like my parents retiring in their early 60s. My father in law just retired last summer.
