The article starts off with a small town in Texas but goes on to list other small towns across the US where the police dept has been furloughed or disbanded.

Residents of Alto, Texas, Brace for Crime Spike After City Furloughs Police Force - WSJ.com
City Council members sent the police home when they decided they couldn't afford them.
..
Half Moon Bay, Calif., is now patrolled by the San Mateo Sheriff's Office after city government earlier this month dissolved the local department to save more than $500,000 a year. Nazareth Borough, Pa., is negotiating a contract for public-safety services with a regional force. In Wenonah, N.J., voters will decide in November whether to eliminate its seven-officer force and have another municipality assume its policing."

One down, several thousand to go. Can we speed things up some so us citizens can live in peace?

No, that isn't the issue.

I live in a county that has 23 separate police jurisdictions (24 if you count the county sheriff's office).

That is not efficient. There's a lot of duplication and waste there.

We also have 23 school districts, of which 19 have only one high school and one middle school. That is also grossly inefficient, with duplication and a waste of resources.

It wouldn't hurt to have some or all of those police jurisdictions and school districts merge to reduce staff and save taxpayers money.

Yes, some people will lose their jobs, but my function on this Planet is not to ensure everyone works for the government.

I'll agree about the police. I have seen first-hand what happens though when a town loses its school. Who wants to live in a town where you know you'll have to bus your kid 60 miles to the nearest school? The town will then die as a result of schools being consolidated.

Actually no. This is occurring because there is no revenue for these cities and they have shortfalls.

There must not be enough car traffic going through these little towns. That is where most of these little towns get their revenue...traffic tickets.
