To discourage people from doing it. Being in favor of legalizing pot is different from being in favor of proliferation of pot.

Why? How has its prohibition benefitted the country?

Hasn't New Yawk banned smoking just about Everywhere?

What happens when they ban smoking in your own home (Think Ca.)?

No problem for hypocrites I'd guess!

If it is perfectly ok to smoke it, then why discourage age appropriate people from enjoying it?

Well, drug addiction is never good. And there are some negative health effects, but not enough to warrant prohibition, especially since the benefits of legalization outweigh the cons of prohibition.

It has always seemed to me, that it would be just one more vice to indulge in. But you are right, in the way this country has jailed pot smokers and encouraged drug cartels it has hurt the country as a whole.

I see your point, but I hate the government getting involved. Especially when most of these states that are clamouring for legalization are just wanting to get their grubby little hands on the tax revenue.

I think marijuana should be handled the same way we handle alcohol.

That to me is key, there should be some benefit to prohibiting something. While there are no doubt some who cannot smoke and/or drink responsibly I'd say the vast majority of indulgers can. When I've searched 'Ambien deaths' and read some of the horror stories I simply can't believe they're considered just fine & dandy while a toke or two on a naturally growing weed should make you guilty of using a Schedule 1 narcotic.
