I hate Christmas and the weeks leading up to it just leave me cold with dread..ugh!!
I've done the routine when my kids were small but now...nope nada
My parents told me even as a child I wasn't overjoyed with Christmas.
I detest the commercial side of it....always feel bad for all those kids watching tv and being fed the Santa bull only to wake up on Christmas with nothing...then go back to school and hear all about other kids gifts...how does one explain that away
Here we are again...it's Christmas time, the most pretentious time of the year!
I wonder if others have noticed the same things.
Here's some of the usual:
-Peace on Earth, yeah, right, (ha-ha-ha) lots of peace! Seems we haven't heard much of this phrase since the invasion of Iraq.
-good will toward men...(ho-ho-ho) as pertaining to the recent discussions about the merits of torture.
-people reminding us to remember the real meaning of Christmas as they jump into their cars and zoom off to the mall to join huge crowds for glorious shopping.
-the media (radio, TV) is filled with cheesy, infantile, fuzzy-feel-good meaningless music ad nauseum. (I fortunately have a large collection of CDs and cassette tapes)
-the frantic bombarding by TV commercials throwing their gift idea concepts into your face. Buy this! Buy that! Buy NOW!
-many US troops needlessly away from home. Many military families spending the first Christmas after the burial of a parent/son/daughter killed in action. The suicide rate for soldiers has increased dramatically...but who cares? How about the soldiers who are made to jump thru burning bureaucratic hoops before they have their wounds and ailments treated, if at all? Merry Christmas?
-homeless people (including families with children) being treated to Christmas meals at various shelters. Good that some people do this. But where are the poor going to eat for the other 364 days? Or enjoy a bit of warmth?
At this time of year I withdraw into the comfort of my work room where I have my choice of music and think about things other than the annual madhouse outside. For years I've viewed Christmas as a time when people become even more phony than usual, pretenders of Christmas cheer, uttering hollow phrases and demonstrating non-genuine gestures.
I was wondering if anyone else can relate to this.
You're a bad banana with a...greasy black peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel!!!

Wow!, Not sure if you sound more like Scrooge or the Grinch! At our house Jesus is the reason for the season ! So yeah all the commercialism and unnecesarry stress we try to avoid. We try to focus on the Birth of Christ and what that meant to humanity, a very positive and uplifting time. Of course if you dont believe, I can see how you would be so depressed!
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'"
That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
I know what the OP means and agree, for the most part. I am a devout and practicing Christian - I don't just talk the talk, but I walk the walk (so to speak). Christmas is a joyous celebration of the birth of our Christ and Saviour, but some have it all wrong. Commercialism has run the true meaning of Christmas into the ground. Many people who are out shopping, shopping, shopping, hosting "Christmas parties", and decorating their houses are no more Christian than Satan himself. Which brings the "GREED" factor into the picture - adults try to outspend each other during the holiday season and then pass this concept on to their children. I am so tired of hearing "Gimme, gimme, gimme" and "I want, I want, I want" when instead, families should be opening up their Bibles and reading The Christmas Story together, attending church together, helping out at a homeless shelter, or donating money or items to a worthy charity...these are things that make the Christmas season (Advent) special and meaningful. And, as someone else mentioned, the Christmas spirit should last year round, not just during December.
Christmas is about love and giving, not glitz, greed, and phoniness.
Happy Birthday, Jesus.
P.S. And for those who don't believe in Christ, I can't understand for the life of me why they celebrate Christmas at all!

Because it beats going to work.
And yes, I believe in Christ.
