Why would you be proud to be black? LOL...that's ridiculous.
You didn't choose your race, and being of any race isn't a personal accomplishment. It's just what you are.
I take pride in being a black man and i endeavor to represent it the right way at all times, but i'm not proud to be black.
pride and proud are basically the same thing.
but to answer your question, for many people, they have seen people degrade someone for being black. So to them it is a badge of honor to be proud of your skin color.
I honestly don't get the controversy, few Africans would consider her African either. She's not saying she is not Black just that she has no cultural ties to Africa. This is true.
She's biracial so how could she be African American? That's probably why she's against the labeling.
Me? I'm Pennsylvanian American.
If you are bi racial and one of those races is African American, then by definition you are African american you are not ONLY African america, but you are african american.

There is no controversy.
The term African American is not about cultural ties, its about origin of ancestors.

Uh; that attitude's changing, at least by us anglo white people. Tho many Black people HATE it when "1 of their own" LEAVES the "plantation" because there's LESS racism from us in 2014 against mixed race dudes and ladies. So I def understand "people of color"; even full on Black ones, wanting to join the anglo white world because we've got the power and the "rule of law" unlike the ghettos.

Are white South Africans EVER referred to as African Americans?
I knew of a white girl who was born in Africa as her parents were on peace corps mission-she qualified for some scholarships as an "African-American".
